Pretty cool. Nice price point too. I just want to swap that titanium DLC Axis bar into my 531-1501.

How much is the weight savings from going to a titanium axis bar? I am curious because there doesn't seem to be a weight savings off the 530 and the blade length is the same. Is the 535 blade heavier than the 530?

Not sure about that titanium axis bar. Seems like a recipe for lock stick.

Has to be negligible. Its an incredibly small part anyway.

I like the knife and will get one, but the most interesting part of this release is the introduction of the new mini deep pocket carry clip.

Jason or BM, I assume this knife and the clip follow your same hole pattern? Is there going to be satin version of this clip?

Not so much worried about the titanium axis bar as to how well the dlc coating on it will hold up if the actual bar itself is coated. And I'm a big fan of dlc

Is this the first Ti lockbar? For those wondering what the Ti elements of the 2017 forum knife might include, here's a clue.

I would think so and I think that concerns about it sticking and how the dlc coating will wear are reasonable.

Right? I don't want to be a Negative Nancy (but yet, here I go), and it's not like we're really entitled to anything here (like, you know, Forum Knives), but it seems odd that all we got here on the company fan forum was teasers. Retailers were selling these things over the past few days with more actual detail than we've gotten here. In fact, someone was scolded for talking about this, I believe.

However, having complained like I just did, I will say that I am very intrigued by this pocket clip....

I don't see how we could get an early tip-off. Even if you could rely on forum members' ability to keep a secret, anyone can see these posts.

That said, I'm ready for someone to leak a photo of the 15016-161.

    Couple items/assumptions:

    1. They can't do teasers and provide us super secret info here like everyone has been asking for. The forum is open for viewing and spiders can crawl it, so any info released here is public info period.

    2. I am pretty sure Benchmade has some sort of confusion over the release of this. First was the Facebook post and pullback, then the early website releases online which weren't suppose to happen...I think.

All in all, I am glad to just receive info and have a company forum to come on.

100%. We aren't perfect and we really appreciate your understanding when things don't go quite as planned.

    Thanks for your comment!

/|\ I believe the end result ( this 535) worth bumpy road.

I like the 53Xs & IMHO this looks like it maybe best one yet.
    Pro (appear to be):
    1) easier to index handle side
    2) the thumb studs look more comfortable & like color
    3) like the bigger thong hole

    Cons:
    1) biggest concern is that Ti axis bar, may turn out OK but I'd prefer the tried & true stainless as we know there no gauling.
    2) glad for those who like them the new deep carry clip, but me I'm calling BKC's CS for a split arrow clip

I've heard of Ti galling in threaded applications, but something tells me this is yet another "Griptilian's plasticky handle will break" situation.

Speaking of plastic, no one's concerned about those relatively thin, unsupported lanyard holes? I don't really think they'll break, but I'm more concerned about that than the Axis bar sticking to the blade.

Anyway, I'm in agreement with Bill's pros above. It looks like a great evolution of the design!

/|\ I've never use my knife as a grappling hook. I use 100 lbs test cord, & it is attached to belt or wrist. If over 100 lbs of stress I think I'd rather loose the knife than pulling my shoulder out. But to each his own on use of the thong hole.

I like the look and the price of the 535 Bugout- imo, it's definitely going to become a best-seller for Benchmade.

The blade shape reminds me of the 707 Sequel.

I do think that lock stick is a real concern for a Ti Axis bar, since it's a problem that plagues Ti framelocks.

With regards to the DLC coating, my only experience with a DLC coated Axis bar has been the 908-1501BK Stryker, and I must say, that was the grittiest Benchmade that I own. It took hundreds of opening and closing the knife, to decrease the grittiness. After a while, it does wear off- hopefully it's noticeable on the picture. I'm guessing that Benchmade decided to coat the axis bar to counteract any lock stick.

Sure, I'd rather damage the lanyard than the knife, and the knife than myself. That's totally unrelated to my point though. Anyway, time will tell.

Maybe Bill's thong is too tight, and riding up his "thong hole". It may be throwing off his ability to focus.

I'm not too worried about galling with the Ti lock bar. I think it's more of an issue with liner locks and framelocks due to the surface area of the locking surfaces and the angles at which they interact.

OF course, I'm not an engineer, so what do I know?

On paper, I'd be worried, but I know Benchmade tests prototypes thoroughly before they release products, so I know there won't be a problem.

Also, I will add that I consider my Benchmade knives that have the DLC coated hardware (Axis bar specifically) to be among the smoothest I own. Mind you I don't own any made from Ti. I'm anxious to hear from Jason as to the reasoning for this... Was the 535 designed similarly to the 940-1 in terms of excercising every avenue possible for weight reduction? Why the Ti Acis bar if weight is negligible over a stainless steel one?

If the Ti axis bars wear prematurely, isn't Lifesharp the answer to that? I'm sure these are going to sell in numbers where they'll have parts available forever.

Well, I'm guessing that the reason for the DLC coating, which is very wear resistant. I guess I'm just wondering why Ti?

@Marty yeah, I'd imagine if this was a test, they'd do it on a limited release. Rather bold to put it on something where they forecast great popularity (if in fact that is the case).

Anyway, I'm a Ti nut so I'm happy to see BM experimenting more with it.

/|\ interesting, so looked up cost of Ti compared to stainless steel & Ti cost twice as much.

Think I'm with you as this a question for Jason.
Also if I send in my 535 will CS swap out the Ti for a stainless one used in the 530 & 531?
