Yes, thank you for the suggestion. The slightly thicker stock, more shallow grind, and dependence on using the pinky bump as part of the grip is the reason why I haven't picked one up yet. I like the blade length, thin stock, and high flat grind the 490 has, which is why I think I would like the 535. I also like the lines of the 535's handle.
I know I'm going to pick one up (535) one of these days. It's just which month I plan on adding it to my budget relative to other knives I want to pick up first. Knowing that I don't like thin handles and the timeline and expense of custom scales puts it further down on my 'to buy' list. However, I am itching to add another 3-3.25" knife to my EDC rotation.0 -

I been kinda asleep at the wheel on this thread, yeah, I think a 586 actually fits your requirements at least on paper. Blade on the 586 is not as thin as that on the Bugout and 531, but it isn't thick for a knife of its size. I have a 586 with Valox 585 scales on it that I like a lot...got a lot of money into it of course, but it's a cool knife. A standard 585 would fit your bill pretty well too, though the primary grind is not quite full height.

535 vs 585 - very interesting contrast in handles. Before looking at them side by side, I would have thought it was a comparison between short and thick and high and thin, but actually, the handles are almost equal in height. So it is just fat vs thin. My G-10 scales are actually a teeny-weeny bit thicker than the factory scales.
My wide palms and short fingers like both handles very well. Both are quite comfortable to cut hard with. It is very interesting to me how the pressure from hard cutting seems distributed so differently by the two handles. With the Mini Barrage, I feel a lot of pressure on the web of my hand. With the Bugout, there feels like a lot more traction with my last two fingers - ring and pinky - that moves the cutting pressure off the web and more toward the middle of my palm.

I think you’ve captured an important difference between the two knives. The 535 handle is as long & wide (just not as thick. But the 535 being thinner rides easier in the pocket, is also lighter and has a longer blade (better blade to handle ratio).
So if you’ve not a total spaz & are able to use thumb studs why would you choose to carry the mini-B over the Bugout?0 -
Well, if it were a matter of either/or, I might choose the Mini Barrage as an EDC due to blade length considerations < 3", or I might choose it for strength vis-a-vis full liners, though I don't think there really is that much of a meaningful difference in strength. Or you might choose the Mini Barrage because you like the way if feels better or because you are a steel snob and the 586 comes in M390.
In the final analysis, if I had to choose between the two, I would take my custom G-10 bugout without having to think about it very much. But there really is plenty of justification to make a case either way.0 -

Thank you very much for the info and pics! I don't want to clutter up this thread with my questions or non 535 suggestions, but your info was very helpful. I really just need to head into Cabelas and try out the knives in-hand. Right now my 590 is my winter EDC when local laws permit (Chicago trips necessitate something under 2.5"), and I am communicating with Keyman for 590 scales.0 -
Been away for a while, but happened across one of these and had to pick it up. This thing is sweet. The larger Sequel I've wanted. Looking forward to a variant or two. 0
