Here's a little info I can maybe add: The 710-3 I thought was a KW exclusive. Not 100% sure on that, but I am sure it has the clear Ceracote coating and the uber hardened M4 blade.

Thanks for clearing that up. I was almost positive that the M4 blade wasn't a bare bead blast but all I had to go by was pics that I had seen.

Ya, Corey, Benchmade came to a policy decision a few years ago that they were not going to allow the release of any M2 or M4 blades without a coating on them. The few knives that are exceptions to this policy are pretty rare.

So far I've bought 2 knives with M4 and they both had tiny specs of rust on the cutting edge, polished right out with minimal effort, but I still took notice, that stuff will rust quick and easy.

This myth, is the reason we only get coated hss blades from benchmade.
I've had no problem with rust on any of my bare M2/M4/M35/M42/T42 hss blades, some with almost 30 years of use and storage.

I've only seen one of these. Apparently there are three more floating around somewhere. Aluminum scales with some sort of splash finish. Ti Liners, M2HS blade with what looks like the BC1 nitride treatment.

That color scheme looks similar to the 771 Osborne. Thanks for the pics.

I may be mistaken, but I'm nearly certain that these were also available with partially serrated blades.

Also, at least the first few hundred 710s had aluminum handles, rather than G10. Whether those were marked "Prototype" or not I can't remember.

There were some of the original run marked Prototypes. I do not know if they all were or not though. I do not think they were, but I can't say for certain.

After a time, they did a run with the aluminum handles and labeled it the 710-SPL.

The easiest way to tell the difference between the early original run and the SPL run is the SPL came with 154CM blades, which replaced the ATS-34 BM had been using.

Another interesting tidbit I just remembered as I looked at the pictures in my gallery: The early 710's were only drilled for pocket clips on one side.

    Thanks and glad to share.

I hope this is not off topic but Benchmade also fooled around with some aluminum scales on the baby brother 705 model as shown:

Does anyone recall seeing a standard production black 705 in aluminum scales?

Interesting. I have one of the first regular production 710s and it's drilled on both sides.

The Prototype is only tapped on one side, the Pre-Production is tapped on both.

Also did that 710-1 come with extra pocket clips? Mine came with 2 alternate clips in the box as well as alternate screws (black/silver). I was wondering if those originally came with the knife.

    710DLC-1 #4of250.

I picked up a Benchmade 710-1401 from a seller on another forum. When I got the knife last night I saw that the handles were blue and black scaled G10 and the backspacers were anodized blue as expected.

What caught my eye was the blade is marked D2! Was there ever a version of the 710-1401 that was released in D2 and not M390? The box says 710-1401 but also says "manual open" and "D2" on part of the label. It's one of the new Benchmade blue boxes.

Thank you for your help and input, I'm trying to do some research before contacting the seller and getting real upset that he switched out the M390 blade for a D2, which would be so dishonorable!

Post up pics of the box.
As far as I know the 1401 should have an M390 blade. Check knifeworks.com and see if they changed the specs suddenly.

I contacted Benchmade and Knifeworks to see if they had any thoughts. I guess I can't be upset at the seller, this is one of the images from the FS post. I didn't look carefully and jumped on what I thought was a great deal.

It's news to me. How could they use the same model number with a different blade steel?

I'm interested to see what Benchmade and Knifeworks say. I thought the 710-1401 would become a part of my regular EDC rotation. The M390 and especially the rounded spine on the blade sounded really cool to me.

The 1401 doesn't have a crowned(rounded) spine. The only models that have that is the 710-1 and 710-2 and some gold class.

Send it back to knifeworks to exchange for an M390 one. They still list it as coming with an M390 blade. Unless the seller doctored the label, which seems like a lot of trouble.

Didn't the 710-3 have a crowned spine also?
