Benchmade wrote back to me saying the original version of the 710-1401 was produced with a D2 blade. I think it's a beautiful looking blade and all together a nice knife even if it's not the M390 I was expecting.

That being said, PM me if you're interested in this knife.

That doesn't make sense to me. I've seen 710-1401's with M390 blade in the older style box....yours is in the new style box, which leads me to believe that it was made this year.

I stumbled across an old foreign ebay listing for a M2HS, BC1 coated, Black G-10 Prototype June 2001. I couldn't tell if there were any marking on the blade.

Thank you for the input, everyone. Jason from Benchmade was watching this thread and offered to swap out the D2 blade on my 710-1401 to the M390 blade. Awesome! Love Benchmade!

Didn't the 710-3 have a crowned spine also?

    Yes.
I was thinking of M390 blades then muddled my post by adding the GC comment.

One of these days I'll go back and update the original post, but for now I'm being lazy. Anyway I've managed to get a few more Aluminum handle early models. I've got 2 prototypes, 1 signed, 1 not signed, a pre production satin and pre production bt. I've noticed quite a few subtle differences between the proto and pre-pro...the proto clip is only tapped for 1 position (tip up right hand), the grooves in the handle are slanted more, the thumb stud is bigger and farther ahead on the blade, the clip is mounted higher, and the handle screws thread directly into the handle. On the pre-pro there's threaded inserts recessed into the handle.

I've seen that one on ebay for sale, but the seller also has a 710hs and a 710 with 154cm blade, both with aluminum scales. So I wasn't too sure about the originality of any of his stuff. Might be legit, but I've never seen another one.

I did manage to snag a 710-02 recently, that 710-01 doesn't come up for sale too often though.

I finally did a little updating to the first post...added a few new pics and updated some info.

Your collection is very impressive! I admire your loyalty to the 710

Reminds me of TDOGG & his awe-inspiring 94x collection or like some with the Ares.

The -01 isn’t the most flamboyant of designs (e.g., gold Class), however, it holds a classic, cultural charm IMO. The F&F is excellent, and you can certainly appreciate the weight. It feels indestructible. She’s not a user, in fact she’s sat in the collection for over a decade lol - shameful I know..

Wow,48 variations of the 710! That's a hell of a run.. My hats off to mchenry&williams for the axis lock and benchmade for offering so many badass variations. I have a ATS34 first production 1 of 1000.. Almost 19 years old and still it's one of the best knives In my little collection..

/|\ nearly a 20 yr run hats off to all involved.

With nothing like it in BKC line up I'd expect LE's from time to time.

Benchmade 710 - something about varieties of steels.

    A - ATS-34 (59-61 HRC)
    B - M2 High-Speed (60-62 HRC)
    C - 154CM (59-61 HRC or 58-60 HRC)
    D - D2 (59-61 HRC or 60-62 HRC)
    E - CPM-M4 (60-62 HRC or 62-64 HRC)
    F - M390 (60-62 HRC)
    G - Damasteel (58-61 HRC)

And what was standard Benchmade 710.

    - Bill McHenry and Jason Williams design
    - Axis lock (U.S. Patent #5737841)
    - Modified clip-point blade
    - Ambidextrous dual thumb studs
    - Black G-10 handle scales
    - Double 410 stainless steel liners
    - Black plastic backspacer
    - Black reversible steel clip

Just like the ares. A couple of amazing LE'S, each one as cool or cooler than it's predecessor, then poof... Keyser Söze. Gone.

/|\ yes like the Ares. The Ares may not be in production but a lot of great LEs these past years to keep Fanboys happy. That what I am expecting with the 710. If BKC follows same game plan ( tan G10, red/ black G10, green/black G10 handles on LEs with premium steel) the LEs will sellout & 710 Fanboys will be happy

And what a beautiful World it would be!

We have't heard much from Jason this week, so since he really busy, you can help him out. Start a poll

" what materials do you want on the next 710 LE"

Any of you 710 enthusiasts have a stock backspacer for your 710? I am looking for one to put my stock black scales on. I'll pay for it and shipping. Thanks.
