Are you sure they are painted I think some of the new ones are actual tan g10 and the older ones are pained I might be able to use nail polish remover but i don't know how well that will work

Nail polish remover works for lacquers but if these are painted (EZ enuf to see on the inside of the scales) it wouldn't work here. I'd try a paint solvent/remover (poss Goof-Off but IDK, there are specific removers for furniture) on the inside of one of the scales to make sure the G10 isn't harmed (pretty impervious me would think), take it from there.

Sell it and buy a black one.

    ...my two cents.

I would almost trade my black one for a tan one.

Mines got serrations, which most folks don't like, but yeah I'd trade it or sell it, but I wouldn't get enough for a new one so I thought I'd just remove the tan myself

Yes, you wouldnt likely be able to sell and make a new purchase from what youd yield from the sale. You would have to wait and get lucky on the secondary market.

Nail polish remover or another chemical solution wouldnt seem the best way to go either. These are not just painted, more of a powder coating I would imagine. Fairly tough.

You could inquire w/ BM on specific coating, and a chemical solution, however I might inquire the forums for someone willing to do a "scale only" swap or perhaps someone who would media blast the scales for you. Plenty of guys on this and the few other well known forums who Im sure are equipped and capable of such an undertaking. Shouldnt be that much of an expense to ship and blast.

    Keep us posted.

Save yourself some trouble. Just post in WTT that you have user tan scales and would like to trade with somebody who has black scales. It's worth a shot.

Sounds like a good plan, TB. The worst thing would be if One & Only started getting some of the coating off, but it didn't come off completely. Then he'd be stuck with an ugly handle.

You could always pass it off as camo

Yea, great idea TB. And if you dont get all the coating off and cant trade, you can always have them media blasted.

[ see previous page for details on both counts]

Alternatively, just to put a new twist on this, how about just painting the scales black?

Just to clarify, the scales are G10, right?

Ok thanks, maybe I'll try trading it first, otherwise, I got some ideas and I'm pretty sure one of them will work, lol

I'm sure some 320 grit sand paper would do the job. Be sure you wear a toxic level dust mask. G-10 dust is a lot worse than asbestos.

I have painted G10 before and then later wanted to return the scales to the standard black.

Bead blasting after removing them from the knife (721) worked well.

It will really depend on how exactly the Adamas G10 scales were made and if they were ever originally black.

As others have posted, the easiest approach would probably be just to paint them.
