There seems to be a lot of back orders at the moment, probably because of the new range expected after Shot Show..

hmm... looks like it ended up with plain black G10 again, that's kind of disappointing.

oh well, I might pick one up eventually, but I like my 710-2 better.

It'd be nice if the price was a bit closer to the M390 version, but it does at least look like they're doing the twill scales... at least that's what "highly compressed epoxy and woven glass composite handle" sounds like.

    I'm still in for one!

Or is normal G10 also considered "woven"?

Hm, didn't realize the regular stuff was woven, too. Good to know; thanks.

    That's shorthand for G-10.

Yeah, it would have been nice to see at least a different color G10, but I'll still be getting one just for the M4.

Cant wait for this one. I love my M390...thought there might be a different scale offering but...I like that its the basic 710 w/ the steel upgrades..-1,-2,-3,...simple,class act...Hail 710

Is this the second time the 710 is released in M4? I think green G10 looks nicer than the black.

As I didn't get the last release this one is compulsory.

I am surprised that Benchmade manage to roll out so many new models/LE's within this month.

    I believe this is correct.

Second time. The first version was the 710-801 with the olive colored G-10 scales and BK coated blade, and then you have this new offering from 'KW'.

yes, that will be the second m4 710 ...
but if the m4 is treated on the new one as it is on the contego or the forum rift, i mean harder, that would be a quite different knife (and not because of the cerakote !) !

Yes, G10 is simply woven fibreglass glass cloth infused under pressure with Epoxy resin as a binding agent, typically with a colouring agent (most frequently black...).

It's a cross between fibreglass and carbon fibre...

KW web page says the hardness will be 62-64, is this harder than the first version?

For those brothers who are lucky enough to also have the first version it would be interesting to hear your comparison of the performance of the old and new blades.

Despite the fact that they Coated the M390 Blade the knife was stunning, M390 really didn't need a Coating and I am sure it was for pure ascetics and no practical purpose other than the look..

For what it's worth, the earlier 710 with a CPM-M4 blade had black G10 scales that were *painted* OD green.

Why am I not surprised, it has happened before with the 275 and others I have been told...

Oh really? Whether they were painted or not I think the OD scales look nicer than the black.

Side question: why did Benchmade choose to paint over the black scales rather than just simply using the scales in that color?

Regarding the green color of the 710-801's scales, we've heard since its release that the color was just painted on. I still question that for two reasons. First, if you look at the inside of the lanyard hole or if you remove a handle screw, the G-10 looks to be solid green. Second, I have flat hammered this knife ever since I got it and there's not a bit of any other color showing up on it...so paint or not, it doesn't bother me a bit.

Now, if you want to get to the bottom of the question, Keyman just made replacement scales for one of these not too long ago, so he probably has the green scales sitting there in his shop. KM, if you scratch the underside of these green scales are you still getting green or would you say they were painted?

M-4 is sure tempting, and I have been feeling the absence of a 710 in my rotation for some time, but can't get into a flat-sided knife any more. This won't take pocket time away from my two 806-1101s, Barrages, Presidios, or Griptilians.

    PO,

Just use more pockets and carry more than one to equal out the pocket time, I am sure that you can do it ..

That is the perfect way to get an absolute answer on the question, Good Idea 99....

This is a green scale from a 14200-701, grooved for improved grip. Clearly it has been painted.

  • keyman
    Painted.

Well, like I said, Ryx, if that's green paint, I want to start selling it for roof coating. The crap is tufffff!
    Cool

Also, looking at that HK handle, it almost looks like the grooves in the green were painted with black grip paint, rather than it being a grind job exposing a black interior. But, you're the one there by it, so you'd know better than me.

Keyman looked into it and says the green is a paint, so my only question is, how do I order it in 5 gallon cans?
