I've used Ren wax or some sort of paste wax on knives and firearms for a few decades. It's not as messy as oil and doesn't wipe off as easily.

Mine have been wearing on the corners mostly. I actually don't mind though as I kind of like the worn and used look... as long as it's honest wear and not faked or abuse...
