I experienced the same thing. I had bough a sbk that had been in a display case for quite some time. Therefore, I would thing it was handled a bit. Then I bought a 806-901 from Rx and the scales were visibly different. The sbk had more of a shine, while the other was a matte look. I assumed the difference came from handling.

    Yes, that's it.

The sbk I've handled a lot is black, shiny and a little smooth.

The PE is a little more gray, matte, and more grippy.

It's been so long since they came out that I forgot. Seems they came that way though, huh?

Yeah I suspect it's lot variation-- I had a set on an 805 user that I carried quite a bit, but they stayed pretty grippy, didn't get smooth.

G-10 can dry out and give it a dry gray looking appearance. I bet the oils from your handling the one you use have kept it darker looking. Spray some WD-40 or rub some oil on the handle and it will darken up.

Also, if you have used the knife, the grip on the G-10 will wear making feel more smooth.
