Makeing that first Cut......

depends on the knife and if I have owned one... or if it's the first time I've handled the knife.
I'm getting to where I know how steels perform... and have held many knives so ergos are
easier to decide if a knife will work for me or not with out actual use.
I may need to carry it several days to see if it really grows on me.
as my time in the hobby grows. and I gather knives. my need to,
"Use the Dang Thang" is not as prominent as in the beginning.
Once I decide I like it and I'm going to keep it.
a card board box, steak, plastic straps on pallets. don't matter. I just start using it.

Since I'm in a rough spot in life I can't afford to have knives I don't use. Every knife I have has been used. Some used more then others and some barely get used at all. But that's just how it is. Safe queens are cool, just not for me

    I can't do it-

Out of my collection there are three BM's that I use- a 9100, two 175's, and a nimravus

the rest are NIB sitting in my safe to leave for the girls

All the Benchmades I currently own, I consider EDCs and users, so no problem. Can't wait to take that first cut as see how she does.

I had some Benchmade custom balis that I hated to even swing...sold 'em. I miss 'em once in a while, but couldn't stand to just look at them.

I only have one knife that I haven't cut anything with. It is a kinda arty-farty hand made. Thinking of selling it.

I don't really buy knives unless I intend to use it. If I get one and I can tell I'm never going to use it, I sell it and get something else. I had a 960CFP for awhile, but I could tell I would never use it. When the coolness wore off I traded it for an insingo.

I pretty much wake up and pick whatever one I feel like that day out of the cabinet, they're all users. I only have like 25 high end knives though. I like to imagine DJ having hundreds... I could see how it would be difficult to find time to use them all.

Unless I'm chopping branches or something most of mine, even NIB if I'm in the mood are fair game. Sure I have those I won't, but how can I tell if I like the knife enough to keep it? It's in at least making that first cut to see. It gets easier after that.

I think of my nib knives as spares.Just sitting there waiting for current users to fail or just grow old on me,which is the root of the problem.Failure rate is low and a good blade you just dont get tired of.And new spares in LE designs and cool steels are too frequent

Well I never expected to buy a knife and not use it. I never should have said "never". When my 950 Forum Knife arrived I opened it up and decided that like a fine wine this one should age for a while. This is the first time I didn't immediately run around and find something to cut. I hope that this doesn't happen again. If it does I might have to change my tune on "collecting" and who knows what that might cost!

Well, last night I finally made a spreadsheet of all the knives I currently own and what I paid for them...let me advise you not to do this because that number will be a lot higher then you'd expect.

Boy for me this is a tuff one I guess there are two sides of me the collector and the Benchmade Knife user.

I really brake my knives into two categories, the ones that I have purchased for my collection and the ones that I use in my Rotation.

My collectables are exactly that collectables and the personal use knives are what they are, with the two never crossing but then Benchamde Knives are NOT the only things that I collect (I just am very partial to Benchmade Pocket knives). My collections go from fine Watches, Sculpture and Artworks, Civil War Militaria and Fine Firearms, I am exactly the same when it comes to Firearms there is those that I collect and a rotation of what I use.

There is also the times that I buy a knife or a firearm to us or carry and when I get it in my hands for the first time I just don't like it, they usually end up sitting in the safe until I decide either to sell it, trade them or give them away as a gift.

The funny part is the older I get the less I find that I carry or use, I spend more time with one or two pocket knives for EDC and one or two hand guns for personal protection.

One of my friends called me a minimalist the other day and I am was not too sure how to take it at the time, but when I look back at my late Father I am the same as he was at my age an active collector but also a minimalist and complicated man with simple needs.

When I first started collecting, I had a very large collection of NIB's knives that just sat if the safe. I have since then sold off 90% of my collection and narrowed it down to a select few that I actually carry. If I buy a knife and it ends up not getting used, I either sell it or trade it and get something I will use. So to answer your question, no I do not have a problem using my knives I buy.

I think the one knife that I sat on the longest was the 710 I got in trade...behind that, the knife I traded for it.

I don't have any NIB or LNIB knives, if I don't like 'em or can't use 'em then they're just taking up space.

I can hardly bring myself to WAIT long enough to make the first cut!

But then again, I have yet to purchase a rare LE or gold class. Perhaps things will change?

Not that many who have spoken up here have had huge collections so far as I know. I got up to a little over 160 before I started paring down. I've sold ~30 in the last several weeks. I bought a lot of mine knowing I would keep them a while, use them for comparison pictures and such and nothing else. Its not hard at all for me to have a new knife and not use it depending on why I bought it. In dj's case, I know he's bought several just to check out and hold. If he had used then even once, the sale/trade value would be really diminished. I have bought more than a handful just to help out the seller if the price was right and nobody else was biting. If I didn't really want/need the knife, then I'd be a fool to use it.

It is hard to make that decision to use a NIB knife. Of course, using or carrying it converts it instantly into a user of some kind or another. It's like taking an uncirculated coin and throwing it in with your change in your pocket. Once that's done, it's no longer "uncirculated".

My solution has just been to be very certain before I cross that line into the "user" collection. Sometimes you end up with more users than you need, but that's ok.

I have also sold users many times, but never as NIB.

+1 as soon as I get a knife, I start looking for stuff to cut.

starts simple, thumb across the edge.
Hair on the arm or leg. an envelope..
a posty note, a few receipts cut in half.
working my way into, an apple, or slices of tomato
for a sandwich. or a full blown work out on a steak.
