Sharpening with a ??
I figured I,d start a new thread on this ........
I have an edge pro and a paper wheel , but that doesnt seem to be quite it for me.
What Iam thinkin here is that I,d like to get a belt sander type grinder .....what ever its called. I seen the one they use at BM lifesharp service at a distance and it looked pretty good.
Does anyone know what there called or where to buy this type of machine ??
Any links or what ever to steer me in the right direction.
I love my edge pro , but I want something to just walk up to and turn on and sharpen away.
I know it,ll take practice but its something I think I can handle.

Never used one but here's one I found. I looked for "knife belt sharpening". Lots on utube. They look pretty neat. Lucky you have a few to learn on.

I laughed at first, but the bottom one is too painful. 0 -
If the belt sander does'nt work for you, you can always hire the BM sharpener on weekends to sharpen your knives for you.
Are you serious?
I got the lowly, ghetto style Lansky and I'm getting excellent results in no time.
Moonlighting as a circumciser on weekends must take it's toll on those sharp knives.0 -
Belt grinders... Watch out, those can get spendy too. 0 -

Actually yes I am .....I guess Iam gettin lazy.
I wanna learn to free hand ........ all knife makers or most of them use these.0 -
There were some guys at blade with a guided belt sharpener that could be adjusted to different angles. Its not out yet but I have the website link at home. I'm at work now but I will get back to you.

I hope so .........
I didnt walk the total show that much , I spent alot of time at KW booth , then BM and ZT and Spyderco.
Next time I,ll pay more attention ............LOL0 -

I quit smoking, but am in this vid @ 00:100 -
Waiting on a edge master to show up today ,
cant wait to try it out.0 -
I hope you'll post us a pic when you get it mounted and ready for use.quote:"The Society for the Preservation of The AFCK"0 -
Pics later .........they tell you not to install the table and remove the top guard .......
Also remove the belt backing plate , only to be used if your wanting to put a straight edge on something (probably chisels)
Anyway , the only thing I see that I dont care for is the belt change ......it seems you need a coulpe wrenches for that.....its easy , but I just wish it would of been wrenchless.0 -
I probably wouldn't have a problem with it having a belt backing plate. Almost all of my blades have straight edges like you would get with a belt backing plate. If you removed the plate it would probably change things to a convex edge.
I would think the manufacturer would want the machine attached to a table I wonder why they ask you not to do that.
I hope your belt changes end up being fairly easy if you have the wrenches always sitting there for that purpose.0 -
Iam finding Iam gettin some (alot) of static electricity when sharpening.
At first I thought the sharpener had a short circuit ......LOL but every once it a while I,ll get a good jolt.
I,ll say it works good but I need to work out alot of stuff.
Tips I read on another forum seemed to have helped out alot too.
I need to practice...............0 -
Anybody know anything about belt sander belts ?????
What are good ones ???????????0 -

LOL I use one of those too for my softer-steel knives and it works far better than I'd ever expect it to. Before y'all scoff at me I have a stone setup for my good stuff.0 -
Skimo ............you ever use a belt sander for edges ??
Any input here on them.0 -
I have tried them and they are fast and work OK. It gives a real toothy edges. I think the paper wheel probably works better. Shopsmith supposedly is a great strip sander but way too much money for me. Look at the combos with 1"x30" strip with a 6" disk on the side. There are a lot of options which are more reasonably priced. Harbor Freight has a 1"x30" for less than $40. I don't think you will be extremely happy with the results. However the belt sanders are handy especially if you want to make you own scales and for sharpening lawn mower blades if they have not dulled too much.
I still like the wet wheel for fast sharpening of good knives. You really need to strop after this method as it gives a wicked wire edge0 -
I haven't used belt or wheels yet, time and money being tight.
The only advice I could give is to not skimp on your belts or abrasives and look for a leather belt either bare or low micron / sub-micron paste/spray.
I think the obvious things have been covered if you've done research, the only thing I think I would engineer is an angle controlled swing arm over the platten to keep the most consistent angle possible.
I've seen some guys touted as masters of belt sharpening, but I've also seen guys who are 'great' on the edge pro and I find that my technique is very different.
Sharp is a subjective term, some guys don't know angle or grit to save their *ss.
I also don't buy into convex edges being stronger behind the edge, it's patently false, it may be superior for cutting some things because of the smooth transition from edge to blade, but other than that, it's simple fanboy mentality. You have to remove more metal with a convex grind to equal the angle of a V grind, pure math.
I don't dispute that there can be beautiful working edges or hair whittling edges from them, just a little intellectual honesty from the other sharpeners out there.
I could continue my rant, but I don't think that's what you were asking for.

I really doubt belt/wheel can make such bevel as hand/EdgePro work, ask MadRookie.
It's why I'm without concurrence there,I saw/see ONLY BS work on partially good knives.0 -
Belt sanders produce a convex edge. Paper wheel will give concave edge.
Of the three concave is my least favorite but don't underestimate paper wheel as an abrasive sharpening tool.0 -
Having tried sharpmaker, edgepro, two different style wet grinders, flat stones, belt sanders, and other products I can say the best system I have is the edge pro. Dollar per dollar the best I have without question is the DMT magna guide followed by a strop. My work bench is full and I don't leave my edge pro out so I frequently grab the DMT. I can get good/great results with all of them but the time to set up (edge pro and wet stones) is too much effort for on knife. 0 -
Who has a sharpmaker ???
I hear there are different ones ...........
Which is the best ??0 -
I have a Sharpmaker. The basic unit comes with medium/fine brown stones and very fine white stones. Some guys opt for the optional diamond coated stones, but unfortunately, those stones cost as much as the basic unit.
The downside of the Sharpmaker is that the stones aren't very agressive and it can take a long time to sharpen using them. If you get the diamond stones, you need to go easy on them because they will lose their diamond coating if you push too hard.
If you had a knife that only needed a strop job to bring it back to sharp, then the Sharpmaker might do you a good job.
Where you have about the fastest sharpening system in belt sanders, you might have a hard time using this, the slowest system.0 -
I just ordered a sharpmaker ........
I feel it will keep things sharp that I already have.
My thoughts being to never let it get dull , it will be easy to keep sharp.
I also just ordered some after market Moldmaster rods for the sharp maker.
There suppose to be good .........hearsay0 -
DJ, Those Moldmaster rods sound very interesting. I have thought of gluing some EdgePro stones to the face of the Spyderco stones just to give them some balls. If these Moldmasters come as triangular stones and have butt-kickin grit like 120 to 220, that would be even better. 0 -
Iam really liking my sharpmaker ......... 0
