Rockscale Designs - Ti scales
Shoutout to Matt at Rockscale Designs.
He’s doing some great things with Ti.
He’s also pricing his scales very modestly, IMO.
This is why I’ve finally decided to Bug Out.
Check out some of his 535 scale work:
Good ol’ classic blasted Ti:

Some lines:

And my personal favorite, the “Critter” pattern:
(He does custom anodizing too)

Looks like I need to clear a few things up... First, I’m not an official spokesperson, just a big fan of Ti scales. Apologies for the confusion - I do not yet own any 94X scales from Rockscale Design, as they are not yet available for sale. I was simply sharing photos of Matt’s work (not my photos). My understanding is that the Ti scales will only be initially released for the 940-1 & 940-2 configurations. That’s not to say that you couldn’t swap a 943 blade into one of those setups, however. Hope this helps.

/|\,Thanks Mac for clearing that up. We all though you were part of their sales force working on commission.😂

My 943BK should be here just in time along with the Australian guy's titanium blue hardware.

Thanks for showing me another way to spend money

For those interested, all you would need is some 1/8 long liner/backspacer screws and some 940-1 -2 etc spools to make these fit the standard 940. I know xxxadrenalinxxx on ebay sells ti 940-1 -2 spools and screws, so you could go that way if you want these to work on your aluminum 940. I'm working on getting some 940-1 -2 etc compatible spools made as well (probably a couple weeks yet), just in my usual stainless for now, but I'll get some colored sets made eventually. Trying to make it easier for people to switch my scales between standard and -X models.
Totally blown away by these scales. Although I like the inside more than the outside. Hopefully I'll have my stuff set up to do Ti this year sometime and I can try my hand at my own version. I'll just be painfully jealous till then.

I have some of xxxadrenalinxxx's Titanium 940-1-2 spools and liner/backspacer screws on the way.
So using them on the 943 would be the same?

And then I'm going to have to get another 940, -1, or -2 or 943 and buy some of your scales DOT!
Bankruptcy here I come! LOL

The RSD Site is open for business! It would appear that the Titanium Scales for Benchmade Osborne 940-1 & 2 - Sandblast are still sold-out. I ordered the Blue Sandblast and ahhh... Yep, I was bad and ordered a set of Critter Ti's for the Bugout too!
I did message Matt to see if the Gray Sandblast's for the 940-1 & 2 will be produced and if so can he substitute them into my order. I might rethink which 943 I want to add the RSDs to depending on the outcome.
Looks like they are going fast so... Get your orders in!

UPDATE: Just got an email from Matt at RSD. He's going to swap out the Blue Ti's for the Regular Sandblast Ti's and refund me the difference... Great guy!

I'm thinking the 943BK will be the better choice to add these to over my 943?Thoughts?
It appears that the Bugout Critter Scales and the 940-1 & 2 Scales (All three variants) are now sold out.
Hopefully everyone here got their orders in!

Rockscale Design is still doing great things.
Titanium scales for the 940-1 & 940-2 are in the works. Shown below are Matt’s Ti “Mollusk” scales.

WOW, This is definitely better than the one I have. Will this scale make snail trails?
0 -
Arc, I doubt it due to the texture. Snail trails normally form on smooth scales from rubbing on things.
Mine just arrived today and I'll be in Mod mode for a while but I'll get back to you once I have a feel for them 😊

Being blasted Ti, I’m sure the “Mollusk” patterned scales will still show wear, but I agree with Tim in that it will be minimal comparatively speaking. The ridges (being high spots) are what will wear, but should lessen chances of leaving small scratches and “ snail trails” (not to mention the texturing will provide added grip). Flat slabs are not so forgiving, and are quite easy to mark up.

How would that scale do with a DLC? Would you lose any sharpness of the lines? I'm not the most knowledgeable on DLC & curious

Here's a nice high res look at them. You can get an idea about what Marty is saying when it comes to the ridges.
Now off to tear apart my 943!

Think how powder coat is applied. DLC is applied in a similar fashion using "Cathodic Arc Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) with elements of CVD
Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (PACVD)" or Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (PACVD). I'm no expert when it comes to DLC Coatings but I would venture that the high points in the ridges would wear first leaving the lower valleys reasonably untouched.Matt at RSD uses anodizing to make different colored models. I think if you were looking for colored versions of the scale that would be the best bet. Wear would better with anodizing. IMHO

DLC is a tough coating... Diamond like, if you will 😉. Not impervious to wear or scratching, but it is extremely abrasion resistant, and is only microns thin.
BKC’s hard anodizing game is on point. In particular, I can’t get over how well my 490 has held up.
That said, I’d opt for DLC coated Ti scales any day of the week.

Tim, Marks on metal scales is the draw back to me. For EDC I probably won't use it.
Your scales pattern is actually a little bit different than Marty's pictures?
Is that the only pattern they offer?
They starts to take orders at end of the month.
For a "custom made" scale I hope they have the precision and detail.
It can be very pretty by looking at the picture but once in your hand....
I have found counter sink hole off center, curvature are not good to track the blade, edges are not smooth out, etc. Even they are small problem but they are "custom" and I still have to take them off before I send to BKC for sharpening.

Or BKC probably will confiscate my knife as a fake.

BM CS wouldn't keep your knife. They are well aware that there are those of us that customize our knives. As well there are a number of individuals here in the forum that can sharpen and tune your BMK if you are that worried although I wouldn't be. Of course you've voided your warranty by taking the knife apart anyway. I'll bet they would still sharpen it for free!
Marty has posted a few of the different scales that have been made for the 940-1 -2s. The last ones are "Matt’s Ti “Mollusk” scales" which have a different pattern than those I just picked up. If you look on page one of this thread you'll see these which Marty has on a 943 which is what drove my purchase. I've outfitted mine with complete blue ti hardware and its sweet to say the least.
Matt's scales are complete precision at what I would almost describe as Mil-Spec. The reassembly of my 943 went so smooth and everything fit back together perfectly. There is absolutely no blade play in any direction and centering is flawless. The 943 feels great in the hand with the new scales on and the ridges in the pattern without a doubt make the knife grip my skin with no slippage what so ever.
I suggest looking at the the bottom of the RSD Homepage to see the different designs Matt has produced.

I'm waiting for the custom Ti Blue Anodized clip to arrive before it makes its real debut in "What are you carrying today"!

And whenever my damn 535GRY-1 gets here (Still waiting for it to ship
) I'll add the RSD Critters to it and post a teaser here. Have to wait for Mr. Adrenaline to get the Ti Anodized Axis bars in stock before it will be complete though. hehe
