Flying to California
I'm flying to fresno to go to yosemite. I want to bring a bushcrafter in my luggage. The laws there are very confusing. It says no fixed blade knives over 4 inches in any federal or state buildings or maybe any building? If it's allowed to be openly carried what about in the air port?

Nothing carried in the airport.
Not even a Vic Classic on the keys.
California is “special”1 -

Only option is to check in your luggage.

I would check it in. But technically I would still be in position of a 4.4 inch blade in a state building when I picked up my baggage?

As a Fresno native, you can’t bring anything here if flying. Enjoy Yosemite. If you have time, try to get over to Sequoia/Kings canyon as well. I just went yesterday and it was amazing

That's how I was reading it, just wanted to make sure. Can I purchase one of those knives there and then have it shipped to my house?

You should be able to buy something locally when you arrive, and then stop at a UPS, USPS or FedEx on your way out of town and ship it back to yourself.
You might even find a retailer who would do it for you for free, if you purchase the knife from them. I’d call a couple ahead of time and tell them your situation.
You could also order online, ship to your hotel, Airbnb, etc. but that’s tougher to align the shipping and delivery times, especially with a pending UPS strike.

I just flew from CA to Hawaii with my MiniCR in my check-in luggage. Hawaii has no problem with knives. Flew back the same way. CA's big cities (LA, SD, SF, Sacto) all have specific rules about knives but the rest of CA is open. It comes down to blade length and how it opens/pr doesn't. Fixed blade is also about length, but also has to do with concealed vs. carried openly. .

In CA, three codes you have to be aware of - 21310, 171b, and 21510. 21510 prohibits switchblades, gravity knives, spring shooting blades, cane/belt buckle knives, etc. 21310 prohibits carrying anything that can be used as a dangerous stabbing weapon concealed on your person. 171b prohibits certain weapons, including knives over four inches in a public building owned or leased by the government to conduct its own business, town halls, courtrooms, child protective services, etc. Putting a knife of any length in your checked luggage through an airport would not violate any of those laws. To avoid all worry, if you know an address where you could receive a package, just ship it to yourself.
