Very brief Shootout thoughts
I finally got around to putting hands on the Shootout after cancelling my original order and paying the extra to grab a new model darker Auto Fact instead. After trying the Shootout - and granted they are VERY different knives - I'm pleased with my choice.
The Ergos on the Shoutout are great, and if you're in it for an OTF, the overall balance of the action is just right IMO - a bit tighter with a similar shelf as the Phaeton - with a lockup on par or better than a Heretic Manticore (which I consider both as having better action and better lockup than a Microtech UT). The sandpaper bolster is maybe a *bit* much, but if you don't like it, sanding it down a bit would be simple enough (I personally like it, but it may be non-ideal when pulling it out of your pocket for ease and for heavier pocket wear than most scales).
I'm not a tanto guy, but I would definitely sport the Shootout - the tanto is really smooth and could be reprofiled out with almost no work into a drop point. The blade-to-handle ratio is not the best, but that's almost a Benchmade trademark. It's much better IMO than the Infidel, Autocrat, and the Pagan, but it's decent. Feels great in hand too.
But that blade coating. Maybe I'm the only one, but I just absolutely can't stand the PVD. I really wish they would have gone with the Claymore or Shot Show Mini Adamas coating. If they had, I'd get it for sure. But that PVD...I dunno. It's like a pleather sofa that you find on the side of the road and drag up to your college dorm room.

I'll need to get one in hand. Especially to check out the coating. I've never been a big fan of BM's so called PVD coatings.

I agree with you about the blade and handle ratio on this one. This one is better than other BM OTF.
The looks is very important for me. The open slit on the side of the push button is also not appreciated. It should be hidden. The high rise triangle shape of the push button seem a little bit high when you try to retract the blade. Any discomfort for the thumb? CF Elite is not a favorite material for me. All these are just by looking from the picture not really holding one though.
