Partially authentic?
I believe most of this knife is swapped with non original parts.
I would appreciate all of your opinions.

My suspicion is the blade, liners, clip, and maybe the spacer is authentic.
Even the microfiber bag is noticeably different than any of my other known real BM’s.
I did not get a box with it.

What looks off to you?

Width of the thumb studs, width of the axis bar, diameter of the center of the axis bar(exterior of the scales) is larger than my other similar vintage knives(710M2HS/705 SBT-05), the scales are silky smooth, pivot screw head diameter.

/|\ while hard to see details on a SE iPhone. Only thing that looked odd was the clip side thumbstud looks thicker in the pic than other thumbstud.
0 -
Just a shadow.
All of my other 940/943 thumb studs measure .395”OA, one being a 154CM 943.
This one measures .454”OA/sticks out past the scales a bit.

I dont think any pieces are counterfeit, but perhaps not to the exact specification for that knife.

I agree with Jon. If you can post some close up pics of the pieces you have doubts about it would help greatly.
You mentioned that the scales were silky smooth, Are they chalky?
0 -
Not chalky at all. They don’t feel similar to any other 94X scales I have.

After further comparison:
The axis bars measure the same, but It appears the end was not fully chamfered so it appears larger in diameter.
The thumb stud is definitely longer. Maybe an early production thing?
The scales may have been polished or buffed? They are slippery smooth/no friction to them at all. Hard to hold on to.

I’ve had several with smooth scales. No concern there.

Again I agree with John. I've got a newer 940 with very chalky scales and an older one with the older Antennae Benchmade Logo that is pretty smooth and not chalky at all.
It's highly possible that the thumbstud is slightly different as well. Over the years with changes in milling equipment slight differences in tolerance may be seen.
I think your 940 is legit!

Thanks for the help guys. I appreciate your knowledge and input.

I agree - I have a few green 940's and after years of being handled, all of my green scales are silky smooth.

Good to know the scales smooth out with use.
Took it apart today fora clean/lube and found the washers are a plastic like material...

I haven’t seen this before on any of my BM’s.
Is this standard for an early 940?
0 -
I don't think that's standard.. the 940 should have PB washers.
0 -
No definitely not! Plastic washers have never been used in 940s. Hmmm
0 -
I have had a 942 with plastic washers before. The timing is right with your 940 that they could have been used. I’m still confident it’s real.
0 -
While I'm confident that its real, the only Benchmade that I've had that came with plastic washers was a 943 that was no doubt a counterfeit.
Its always possible that a previous owner replaced the copper phosphor washers with plastic. I've heard that some say they get smoother operation with plastic. Back in the day I bought some and tried them and found that I had side to side play and went back to the phosphor washers.

I believe you guys are correct on it’s authenticity.
So it seems the washers are an early production part that got revised to the phosphor bronze over time, and maybe the thumb studs as well.

I didn’t notice any smoother action than any other broken in 940...and am slightly concerned with the side to side play. This will be a user and needs to be tight.
Where’s a good source to purchase some phosphor bronze washers if I decide I need/want to change them out?

/|\ I’ve seen washers for sale on eBay.
Can’t recall for sure but think my very 1st 940 had nitrite washers.
Nothing wrong with nitrite washers. Emerson uses them on his CQC6’s & many of my Terzuola have nitrite washers.

Thanks, I’ll look there.
Any idea when your first 940 was manufactured?
Good to know other quality makers use them as well.

/|\ My first 940 was first year they were made.

Please correct me if I’m wrong. I believe that would be 2001.
Also, under the clip screws the anodization still had that chalky feel.

/|\ My 1st 940 is not with me but stored on the other side of the country for when I visit family. I haven’t carried a 940 with metal handles since the 940D2CF came out.

I rarely carry one with metal handles, mostly 940S-1.

Two more interesting parts...
The spacer on the left compared to more modern 940 spacers.

In the 2001 catalog the 940 is stated to have a “Green/Magenta” configuration.
Also the liner on the left compared to a 943 with 154CM blade no antennae logo.

its real imo and earlly, i had a 940 and a 941 with the nylon washers

and a 910
