Bulk Knife Storage
This is an evergreen topic, but how do you store your knives? I currently have mine in their boxes in non-airtight plastic totes, and want to move to airtight storage. For that, I'm considering actual Pelican cases or Pelican-clones from Harbor Freight/Monoprice for a mix of savings and quality.
I'm also looking at Nalpak's foam inserts for Pelican cases, which would allow me to store the knives in Pelican cases and store the boxes separately.
If anyone has any recommendations, I appreciate it!

I prefer to keep them with their boxes. That way they stack well, are easy to identify. If something happens to me and my family is left sorting through them then it would be much easier for them. I have friend that keeps them stacked in a safe along with a note inside each box showing what he paid for each knife. If they are being stored inside a conditioned space then I can't think of much reason to store them in an air tight container. But maybe you know something I don't.

Thanks for the thoughts! Not sure what it is, but there's some thin layer of dust that is somehow getting inside my plastic totes, and it's weirding me out. I definitely agree it would be ideal to keep them in their boxes for the reasons you state, but on the other hand i like how accessible they are in a structured storage solution like a Nalpak insert in a Pelican. Thanks again!

Great topic. I started with a cheap hardshell case from Amazon but as my knife obsession grew I went to a larger higher quality vault case company one. Now at what may be the peak of my collecting obsession I went with a pelican case with a precut foam insert from Nalpak for 40 knives. Holds everything even my 85 balisong. I also got a moisture eliminator from KPL that fits into the slot perfectly but I need to get rid of one knife first to make room. This case is great for my entire collection they also make smaller or larger ones. I then used pick foam to make the smaller knives sit higher in their slots.

I keep all the original knife boxes in a large plastic container I got from the container store.
still have the vault case for more knives maybe 😂

the nalpak pic looks way nicer than the pluck your self foam I got with the Pelican. I’d prob change to that at a later date.
Plucking yourself doesn’t look as clean.1 -

Thanks for sharing! The nalpak ones are looking better and better. I just worry about whether larger folders will fit in the 0.75x1.5" slots. Things like the Adamas, Lum 741, Kershaw Tyrade, and others are rather wide from back of blade to back of handle when closed. What's the largest folder you have in yours? Cheers!

Plucking yourself doesn’t look as clean. There's certainly an art to it. I saw a tutorial where they cut the foam with a utility blade to ensure clean cuts, then sprayed the remaining foam with two coats of aerosol Plastidip to help it hold together better over time. It's not going to look as nice as a $70-100 purpose-built solution though.

from a width perspective the slots fit the large adamas, and hinderer xm-24's just fine from a height perspective I even have a Benchmade 85 Billet Ti Bali-Song in there and that's probably as much as it will take, it does compress the foam on the lid but still closes just fine. I don't see it damaging the knife although it's a tight fit. The balisong is 5.7 inches closed and the hinderers are about 5.5 I think. the slot is also wide enough for a spyderco stove-pipe.
They are all in my photo above, the large adamas is 4th in from the left 2nd from bottom. The hinder xm-24s are 6 in from the left 2 top rows. and the 85 bali-song is 5 in from left 2nd from top row. the dimenions of the slots themselves fit everything fine, the adamas deep carry clip pushes a bit near the top on the foam but it's foam, it will just dent a bit

Here's my research ... The Pelican 1525 Air with foam from Nalpak is the cheapest domestic option in terms of price per knife. That said, I prefer Nanuk's cases over Pelicans, and Guard Dog out of Canada makes custom foam for those. Getting below $4/knife (column E) is pretty good. Hope this is useful to someone out there.
