Titanium Handle
I am considering a Bugout custom with Titanium handles. Light weight being an important feature to me, I wonder about the weight of Titanium handles compared to others choices - lighter, heavier, about the same?

I looked at the custom Bugout with titanium handles and a good blade. It drove the (custom) price WAY up. It would have looked nice, but I couldn't see paying that much for it.

/|\ Ti usually heavier than CF of G10. Ti is stronger. For me, I prefer feel in hand of both CF & G10 over Ti. I like CF or G10 as it is usually stronger & lighter.
To each his own preference.

I have to agree. CF then G10 then Ti then Aluminum would be my order or preference. Depending on how the G10 is done, it may even be first. (ie, on Adamas, Super Freek and Mediator for example), Ti makes for a hefty knife in comparison. It’s also somewhat slippery and marks up easily.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. Which do you think is stronger?

Titanium is very strong, but in certain applications it can bend and (eventually) break. Certainly, when speaking of knife scales, that doesn't apply. So strength regarding scales would be a matter of dent-resistance, ability to withstand staining and not cracking, to name a few. Handfeel, as mentioned above, is also a consideration. It comes down to personal preference and how much money you want to spend.

For what it is worth I took my Spyderco Para 3 maxamet that had G10 scales weighing a total of 3 ounces and swapped out titanium scales and titanium hardware. It now weighs in at 4.68 ounces. That’s a pretty noticeable difference.

I've read that the Bugout can flex a little. Do Titanium handles solve that problem better than other choices?

Aluminum 2.57 oz

Ti 2.52 oz

And CF 1.99

Sorry no G10 configurations right now

/|\ Apologize for any confusion as to strength. Ti strongest of - Ti, Al, CF & G10.
To be clear, between CF & G10, I prefer CF as it’s both stronger & lighter. That is important to me in a sub- 3.5 bladed EDC folder that’s primarily spending time in dress pants, kakis or gym shorts. When you get into fixed blades with blades 5” & greater I’m less concerned with weight savings CF may give you over G10 or Micarta.
As to flex in original Bugout handles- I didn’t notice much but swapped handle out for G10. Did notice on my Bailout handle flexed so got CF handle & a Ti backspacer, which stiffened it up.As much as I think highly of both the Bugout ( 535-3 ) & pimped out Bailout neither knocks a 940-1 out of my pocket as I like the ergonomics of the 94X’s handles more & the thicker blade give me more peace of mind. The blade thickness on the 940 exceeds the blade thickness on the 950 , and matches thickness of many of my custom tactical folders.
On days I carry just a 94X I’m not expecting to need a knife. If I think I’ll need a knife I add a 950 or 810-1401. And to that I may even add a fixed blade along with the two folders.

Thanks for the great answers so far.

Well, based on the info and opinions here and from others, I decided on the Blade HQ 535 2002. G10 handles, 20CV steel and $200.00 cheaper than the Titanium version I specked on line. And - 1.98 oz! Like many new Benchmades it was a little stiff out of the box but has loosened up nicely. Very happy.

Sibyrne, did you mean 535-2002?

Just bought 535 ti. Got tired of the cheap feeling of my older custom g10 m4 steel Bugout. Needed a better quality handle for the now no longer available steel-m4 blade-purchased earlier. I’m putting the m4 blade from my older Bugout onto the new (now no longer available) titanium Bugout. It’s expensive but you can’t beat the quality. The additional weight was needed. Adding the Benchmade complimentary longer deep carry clip as well. Only thing you just can’t get from Benchmade is a set of all Ti screws for the Bugout. (Already have a set, Xxxadrenalinexxx.com) There’s something to be said about saying your knife is all custom Benchmade materials. Instead of saying part flytanium, part Benchmade, part China. This will be the best quality, best uniform/tough looking, and strongest Bugout 535 ever made. My opinion of course. First picture: original custom bugout. 2nd pic: recently purchased Ti custom bugout 535

Also Ti is not bending and it most definitely solves this bending problem of the g10 scales
