Why do any knives get discontinued? Sales... Pure and simple.

Does not make sense to devote resources to a knife 50 people want.

Besides the 940 with the black blade is just plain ugly. They should have kept the 942 over the 940, which had the black handle. The 942SBT(K) was one of the best looking Benchmade's ever made.

Cal me crazy, but I think the keeper should have been the 943SBK.  But make it into an auto.  Mmmmmm...the 9430SBK would have been so nice.

There were many BK models discontinued this cycle.

Benchmade has been changing their coating material/process recently. It’s quite possible that those models may be re-introduced with the new blade coating. I have noticed in the past that BM will discontinue a knife, only to reintroduce it the following year with a new blade steel, etc… so this may be the same situation.

    /|\ Not a fan of :

    1) serrations

    2) purple backspacers ( or standoffs)

    3) black coated blades ( but concede there are uses)

Now doesn’t matter if you like them or not, or what your preferences are. My advice & what I follow buy multiples of what you like so regardless of others taste if your dream knife gets discontinued, you won’t be as concerned as you’ve multiple backups.

It doesn’t prevent your idea of your dream knife changing and you wind  up with draw full of

    1) Puma Earls

    2) Gerber LST’s

    3) A.G. Russell one hand openers

    4) balisongs ( retired for legal reasons)

    5) Spyderco Delica

    6) 94X’s ( many, many but only one of the original green handled as like feel of handle & blade in spite of dislike for green &purple as it was supplanted by 941’s & 942’s, supplanted by the October Knife of the month until the 940D2CF came along. Love that clamshell CF handles but now mostly carry the 940-1 as it’s replaceable.

Again if you like it buy a lot.

I’ve been saying it since the list was dropped that I hope it’s a blade coating thing but I’m starting to wonder now. Like for instance, could the model as a whole be on the way out ..? Or worse is it headed to the custom shop..? I don’t know. I was hoping to get an idea. I like the OG bk940. Happens to be one of my all time favs. It’s only flaw is the black coating itself.  DLC should be standard for black bladed models. The only coated blade knives I’ve carried and used on a daily basis  but that still look great and wear great are the pm2 and the 810-1602. My 940bk and 275bksn, love them but the coating is meh. Anyways I’ll shut up. I’ll be buying two or three more and I damn well know it. I’m starting to think its not a blade coating thing.. I didn’t see the 9400bk on the list.. or the 945bk-1.. it’s confusing. Hence the post seeking answers. Maybe a bmkc rep could even enlighten us..

Considering that the Bugout, the Barrage, the Grip, and the CR are in the custom shop, I’d find it odd if the 940 doesn’t end up there sooner than later.  Kinda surprised it’s not there already.

I guess Hans is the man who discontinues any given model number at bmkc. Perhaps he can weigh in as to why the 940bk is to be no more..

I heard they are stopping the production of some of the less popular variants so they can spend their time on larger batch runs for increased productivity during this time of employee shortages. Perhaps when employment returns to normal they will bring some of them back.
