Changes to Blade Coatings
I recently found this on one of the FB Groups!
No more DLC/VPD Bugouts, only Cerakote?
Say it isn't so!

Jason or Jon... Any comments?

The question is really:
DLC
VPD
Cerakote
Which one is better?

/|\ Agreed.
But for what.
1) Is one safer if ingested ( don’t want to turn green or grow a 2nd nose)?
2) Does one last longer & not mar or get scratch up?
3) Which is better cost wise?
Personally other for non- glare in a military setting, I see no use. The coatings get in your sharpening stones, stick around the pivot & when they scratch they look ugly. And if you say to coat blade steel ( like M4) so it doesn’t rust, then you need look at other steels for your environment ( S90v, even D2 with a little maintenance). But to each his own.

does it surprise you? this company is not what it used to be

I've had the best luck with DLC when applied via VPD. It looks great as you can see the metal under the coating and it holds up excellent when it comes to wear.

I agree all your points too.

Personally, I am not a fan of coated blade. I do have coated blade knives but I don't EDC them for sure.

Bill I thought that we discussed that you were going to quit licking your knives!

Talking about coated blade.
I saw this on ebay, I don't see benchmade custom shop have this option but seller say it is genuine.

Sure you can Arc! Just did this one up Black Coated M4 with Blue G10 Handles and all black hardware.

Eek !

Jason, please tell us that this is fake news ...

At least keep the DLC on the 535-BK4 !

Something wrong with my link.
I only have 4 handle choices.

Select G10 and then you can change the front and back colors to blue. 👍🏻

Funny, it wasn't that way yesterday morning. Makes me wonder if the the First Production models have the BK coating and all later releases will be Cerakote.

Are all you naysayers oblivious to what's going on in the world? There are shortages, delays and price increases on EVERYTHING! Every company has had to change many are gone.
TEOTWAWKI does not refer to the apocalypse. I means that things will never be the same again. I've had several happen in my life. Explosion of Mt St Helens, 9-11, Losing a job after 35 years, The pandemic. The world changed after these events. The world will never be the same as it was pre-pandemic. To think it would is not only naive but shows a complete lack of understanding of manufacturing and supply chains.
" I want my XXXX, and I want it now." is juvenile. Get out and start your own company if your not happy. The generation of instant gratification has never learned patience and they are in for a rough ride.

It is real..
That said, a good portion of the initial 535BK-4 build was already completed when the decision was made, so they are DLC. Get one sooner than later if you're a DLC fan!

Thanks for confirming Jason.
Good to know that there are still DLC versions out there...0 -
Sorry Scott,
I'm just a spoiled kid and I'm sure that the Cerakote coating is also great.(but I do prefer DLC
)

No you're not brendan ! I know you.😉 I prefer DLC too. But if it means getting products out the door I'm okay with that. I'm sure BMK is evaluating suppliers constantly these days. Sometimes alternatives just don't exist or have closed due to COVID-19.

Thanks for the verification Jason!
I thought my two FPs looked like DLC!

I have a few sources that do VPD DLC coating and they are currently not accepting any orders. Large or small. Period!
I figured it would eventually hit BMC.

Is there a way to tell whether a 535bk-4 has DLC or Cerakote?
1 -
If you have a First Production version, it's DLC.
After that the switch to Cerakote was made. So probably the rest is Cerakote.
2 -
Jason confirmed that the First Production release were DLC. Production models will be Cerakote.
3 -
Thanks for the replies. I guess it's win loose for me. I don't like seeing the words First Production(It's much better than it use to be) but would've preferred DLC. Mine isn't First Production but I was hoping it still had DLC being an early release but I guess there's no chance of that.

Not gonna lie here...I had to look that word up. Now I have that REM song "It's the End of the World as we Know It (and I feel fine)" stuck in my head.
But the supply issues are real. People went bananas for the 535-4 months ago and were bragging about getting them the day before they were officially released. They seemed to be in rare supply before there even *was* a supply. And the fake Wish and Alibaba-type websites had the fakes up months before Benchmade released the real deal. If the new ones are cerakote, that might even drive up the price of the originals that had DLC, but I haven't been in this game long enough to have any clue on how the "knife life cycle" goes other than coming to the conclusion that "If it's a knife I want, then I will have to pay a lot and be patient".
I wonder how the release of the Om will go...? An in-between competitor to both the Microtech UTX-70 s/e and the Microtech Troodon-M s/e, it would seem. Between the three, I think the Om strikes the best balance, but at that size, it think a lot of folks would prefer the slimness of the UTX-70. I finally looked it up, and 31 states have at least *some kind* of limitation on auto knives. Some restrictions are higher than others and some are hardly even there, but combined with the general federal restrictions on shipping, I didn't realize how restricted autos were until last night.

Just noticed the box on my 535bk-4 says 5-13-21 but no First Production on the blade. Guess they made the change before then?
I'm not even sure what the difference between the coatings are? I Presume cerakote is good but DLC is stronger?
Either way, the knife is a home run. It looks and feels killer. By far my favorite bugout.
