Made in USA

Benchmade only puts the “USA” under the Butterly logo when steel is made in the USA. So if your blade is M390 then no “USA” stamp on blade.

This is true Bill but has not always been the case.  Do you know off hand when they started implementing this change?

Thanks Bill. Any idea why some with the M390 steel do have the made in USA while others (like mine) do not? (Just looking at images on the web) Mine is a recent production so could benchmade have changed the stamping rules? Thanks again

/|\ I’ve been aware of it for a little over 2 years.  Not sure how far back this goes.

Maybe Jason will share his doctrinal thesis on this subject.😉

Haha not much to add, honestly. Blades are marked USA when all raw materials are made domestically.

I suspect this is part of the reason the pocket clips also now only read BENCHMADE. Reducing SKU’s and part numbers streamlines business, and if they can’t put USA on all, it’s just easier to have fewer options.

My m390 Contego doesn't have usa on it, not sure when it was made, I'd have to find the box, but I think it was 2018.  So 2 years at least.

Böhler M390 super steel comes from the Böhler Edelstahl GmbH & Co KG. The factory is in Kapfenberg, Austria. Thus the reason why your Nakamura 484 isn't marked USA at the base of the Benchmade Butterfly.

Now the Nakamura 484-1 on the other hand uses CPM-S90V manufactured by Crucible Industries here in the USA and it has USA laser marked at the base of the Benchmade Butterfly.

I think the waters are a little muddier.

Jason, all Benchmades are products of the USA, correct?  That is, when you ship knives to your distributor in Australia they enter that country as products of the USA regardless of blade material, correct?  Or are your knives made with M390, products of Austria?

From previous conversations, under country of origin law your knives are all legally and could be labeled USA.  From a moral perspective your company has chosen not to label them as USA.  It is not for a legal reason that  you are not labeling them as USA.

I'm not a lawyer (obviously) so I can't speak to that expertly. You are correct though, all Benchmades are products of the USA, but the USA mark is intended to indicate something different than country of origin.

Thanks for the responses all. I guess my main curiosity is around the inconsistency. I.e. some blades with the m390 do have USA while others do not?? Thanks again

It's one of those little details that makes no difference really.  Because the steel is labeled people have opinions about origin but other parts like clips, screws, and washers get a pass.

/|\  Makes no difference to me.

I’m sure most of us were born here in America & no one branded “USA” on us where the sun doesn’t shine.

I thought I was slick by thinking that would’ve been a sign for a fake... I prob passed on a few just because of that.

It’s almost a philosophical argument now...are all benchmades “made in the USA??” Questionable....I will have to settle for the “in spirit” made in the USA . Cheers all.
