not understanding"
the latch being described as counterfeit is very similar to the "authentic" latch.
these are not so similar
i searched google and came up with these

looks like a stock benchmade photo , got it from a retail knife site
shows the flat at the bottom of the lock indentation and flatish or flatter lock ball

a well reguarded site
shows exact profile as i pictured

a feature of this "shouldered" latch, is that it won't let you slide the lock off. you must squeeze the handles and let the spring deploy the latch.

"The spring latch made its debut with the Benchmade 49 SPL I believe, which has a square skeletonized post, what we now know as the fancy latch, but what was at the time referred to merely as the spring latch. Only the 49 SPL, 49-01, -02, -03 and 43DM have this latch. Afterwards it was simplified to the round, tapering post, but retained the head of the fancy latch. looks authentic there's a natural progression
i hadn't seen one pic before i got this knife and started searching - it wasn't an easy find
in all the looking i have only seen these as bm not counterfeit

well after searching and looking at 100's of pictures, i have concluded there are three spring latches used by benchmade.
fancy latch
intermediate
common/present
i could not find any reports of counterfeit fancy or intermediate latches, but the common latch has many copies
