Understanding First Production Runs

My understanding is that First production run is exactly that. BKC produces in economical batch counts in manufacturing run.

Personally from Software industry mind, I prefer after first production. To me, it sounds like beta testing.

Also the First production run is done with plane edge to have laser inscription.  This way, BKC can track long term MTBF upon return / Life sharp. (Mean time between failure) for whatever happens to a knife over the ages.

I'm sure Jason can answer this more accurately.

Thanks for the reply.  So we should see all First Productions in the 3400BK and nothing in the 3400?

/|\ Like MFL, I prefer not to buy First Production knives in case a weakness is found & small improvement made.

Once in a while ( see  Victor) blade changed because cost of manufacturing the first production type blade is too costly. So a first production like that would be highly sort after.

from what i understand they usually will do a first production run of all versions of a new knife. how fast they’re bought by distributors determines when the unmarked regular production run hits the streets.

It's not really like beta testing.. we do that BEFORE the 1st Production run.

That being said, we only choose one SKU per family to number in virtually all cases, although there have been rare exceptions. It aligns to whichever SKU we intend to send to dealers who are part of the Leading Edge program.
