Benchmade 496 Vector
Just noticed some dealers advertise first production. My question is first production better ? Just wondering why its a selling point.

Some people find them desirable where some don’t like the markings on the blade Benchmade did shrink it down recently and I think it looks better now. I could be wrong but I don’t think it tends to add to the resale value. Needs to be limited run for that. I think it’s good to let buyers know.

First production knives are not necessarily better than standard production models. Some collectors prefer first production labeled models as they think they will have a higher resale value. That may hold true with very low number laser marked units, #1 obviously having the best chance of garnering more on the second hand market. If you plan on buying a first production knife and locking it away in a safe then selling it sometime in the future you may have to wait a while before it would actually achieve a higher value. This may happen with low number first production models after the knife has been discontinued.
On the other hand some collectors prefer non labeled knives as they use their knives. Many feel that First Production laser markings take away from the look of the blade especially when its been used. They do not believe in keeping "Safe Queens". As well the more current the knife the more chance that any design issues have been ironed out.
You'll find that a number of forum members carry most of their knives whether labeled or not. Its a shame to buy a knife only to lock it away. If it's a really cool FP, LE or GC and you can afford two, one to lock up and one to carry is a nice option.

Thanks for all the reply's. I want the knife to use not collect. Just thought why the first production listing. To me later might be better as the more you make the better they become as Tim says, but what do I know. FORUMITE you say shrink it down, how so if I may ask?

Honestly most designs have been perfected by the time they go into full production. Considering Benchmade's pretty strict manufacturing processes, it is a rarity that issues are not found during the prototype runs. There have been a few designs that come to mind but again it's a rare thing that changes are made after the fact. Enjoy your Vector Dave!

Correct I was referring to the size of the font so it is smaller and less prominent now.

Be it a first production or not it’s the same knife, most of my BM knives are first production because my favorite store is a premium plus dealer and gets many of the FP knives, if it’s advertised as FP I think they are blowing smoke up your butt no different in the knives. By the way I have many BM and the 496 is my new favorite always in my pocket.

Sound like stage 1 of a knife addiction.
Hopefully you & BIGOLDBOY will give us a review of this knife. I've handled one and really liked it, it can be difficult to find a knife for people with larger hands

The Vector 496 looks great just wondering if the bevel on the blade is a different angles. Just worried about sharping. Thank you.

Not sure on the angles, but flat ground tip & hollow ground main

The actual sharpened edge appears to be the same angle throughout the entire length of the blade. Great knife, it's been in my pocket a bunch!
