washer modification project
Hello everybody. i was looking at my 940 and thought how it would operate if i removes the pb washers and replaced them with nylotron or teflon washers. Another mod i wanted to try was how the pb washers felt if i drilled little holes in them and smithed and polished them over since CRK does a similar thing to their washers. However to get underway i need to know the washer size and can’t seem to find the size anywhere online or on forums. Any help?

Teflon washers many wear faster but I’ve custom with them & had no problems.
What benefit will drilled holes provide? I think dirt collectors.

I think with CRK they intend the gaps to hold the grease in the washer. They recommend a thicker grease for their knives and expect more of a hydraulic opening feel versus the quick flick of a Benchmade. It's an interesting project but I suspect it will only slow down deployment. Best bet would be to get a micrometer and measure the existing washers then you can purchase them from a knife kit website.

I would think metal to metal is the best. No blade play. You would like to use some hard material(PB) but slightly softer than the blade, so it will only worn out the washers not your blade over years of use. Holes? You probably won't see any difference. Simple, sturdy, is the best.

what size teflon washers did you use? and where did you get them?

/|\ I never replaced any original washers. I’ve knives that came with Teflon washers - so far none have needed to be replaced.

Emanuel I to have never replaced or modified any original washers when it comes to my BMKs. Although I have replaced nylon washers with bronze phosphors in other knives.
While I don't have the size of the 940s PB washers handy, the easiest bet would be to take a digital micrometer to the factory washers to get the exact size. Once you've got that you might find what your looking for over at Knifekits. Here's a direct link to their "Washers" page.
I guess I have to ask though... Is there a problem with the operation of your 940 the way it is now?

You may have noticed that tolerance of 940 pivot area is very tight. I don't think there are any other alternative than pb washer IMHO. I have used 2000 grit to polish, then used Slip 2000 EWL to hear adhere and embed to the metal. I have had good results with this "upgrade"
