There are some at my local Cabela's that I would like to go fondle

, about an hour and half away. What I would like to know is if you have to have the safety on while in your pocket or are you comfortable carrying with out the safety on? Kinda defeats the purpose if you have to take time to unlock and have a fast flipping knife to me.

Also any general impressions, good or bad. Thanks.

i don’t use the safety on mine & ive never had it open in my pocket. same with my other axis assist knives. the only time i ever use the safety is when i throw it in a bag with other things that might set it off.

I run with the safety off for EDC, unless I'm hiking with it in my Levis.

I say go flip it first ........... then shop around for other things so its not a wasted trip..........lol
Ive never used a safety , never had an accident YET
Obviously the safety is there for a reason though

Thanks guys!!!! Yes, I plan on going flip it, slip it in and out of my pocket,etc, etc. They also have some ZT's I may check out as well.

Will do, I just checked and they have some in stock. I was wanting to check the 0770CF as it has an Elmax blade and would be a different steel for me.

So I had to take a road trip for work today which had me pass by Cabela's. I asked the gentleman to first see the 490 and I pushed the flipper and man that blade fired out real smooth and snappy.
So I then slipped it in my pocket and put my hand in and out a few times to see how that felt and I looked at the guy helping me and told him that it was real nice and keep it on the counter please. I next checked out the ZT 0770CF and flipped it open but boy it had lots of detente and actually started to hurt my finger after a few openings. I slipped it in my pocket and stuck my hand in and right away didn't like how the tab protruded out and got in the way. so I next tried the ZT 0450CF. Flipped it several times , which was real nice, slipped it in the pocket and slipped my hand in and out but the tab was still protruding too much for my liking along with the jimping on the tab made it a deal breaker. So The 490 it was!!!!! And to top it off when I went to checkout they gave me a 10% discount because it was the display model, Flipping Sweet!!!!

Are there any clip options for the 490, I like a clip that has a little more strength, as in no chance of coming out of pocket on own.

I believe the 490 uses the same clip hole pattern as the 470 Emissary Family.
If you search Custom Clip Benchmade Emissary 470 on the bay you should find a few of them in Titanium out there.
