I like this. Don't care for brass hardware, but micarta on Foray is nice addition as G10 is a bit slippery.

This is actually the 2019 Dealer Qualification knife, so any dealer can get their hands on it! As opposed to last year's being limited to a specific quantity, dealers that place a qualifying order no later than July 12th will receive one.

It's an undetermined quantity this year! Think of it as a Limited Unlimited with a shorter time window of availability.

Joy!... Sounds like there will be a run for this one - first come, first served!

I'm in.  Looking forward to an actual photo.  Maybe it's my monitor, but those scales look black or very dark grey - I'm not seeing the red coral color.

I've got really good panels and they show up very dark grey on mine as well.

I'm pretty sure that we'll be waiting until they are released into the wild before we see any photos of the new Foray.

My guess reading into the posts from BM above would be sometime around July. And of course with the statement "Think of it as a Limited Unlimited with a shorter time window of availability" my thoughts are that once they become available we better move fast!

I'm on the road right now, but I'll see if I can get my hands on one to photograph outside of a studio environment for you all when I'm back.

Here you go gents. Vance has carried this one a bit, so it hasn't been oiled recently.

So I was able to confirm with Troy that this will be a 2019 Dealer Qualification knife...

For those who are unaware what this means... It's a onesy kind of thing...

Authorized Dealers who qualify by placing orders will receive "one" Foray 698-1901 Limited Edition Knife. If they choose to sell it is up to them as it is obviously a collector. So if your interested you should hit up your local brick and mortar Authorized Benchmade Dealers to see if they received one and will part with theirs. I saw one come up on BHQ and it sold within seconds. As well you might find them coming up on the secondary market, but they will be far a few between and I venture will not be up for long before they sell.

I'm impressed.  As I thought from the pictures, the color is more brown than red (at least, to my eyes), but I find it more appealing in person than I did in the pictures.  Between the scale color and the black and brass hardware, it's a great looking knife in my opinion.

Eyes closed, I can't tell it from my original 698.  I don't find the micarta any grippier than the G10.  Fit and finish are perfect, blade centered, sharp.  I've been avoiding buying knives because of a big remodeling project, but I'm glad I made an exception for this one.

First Impressions of the 698-1901 Foray...

    1. My 698-1901 Foray L.E. 527 arrived yesterday and I have to say that it is perfect right out of the box. Centering is dead on with absolutely no blade play. She's going to take some breaking in as she's tighter than a "Witches".

    2. The 20CV Blade came as sharp as a scalpel and I've removed a lot of the hair off my right forearm just playing with it. I have to admit I really like 20CV steel as it seems to take a much better edge than many of the other high end steels.

    3. The blade came laser marked "Limited Edition //527" with no secondary number which is the case with a "Limited Unlimited" release as Troy mentioned above.

    4. This particular knife's Red Coral Micarta scales came pretty dark as you can see in the photo. They're much darker than Vance's above. I'm hoping that carrying it will lighten them up over time. Also I noticed that the cloth pattern in the Micarta is much tighter in comparison to Vance's.

    5. I really like the Smoke Gray PVD Coated Liners and Deep Carry Clip. I noted that the hardware... Pivot, Pin and Screws appear to have a similar coating but are slightly darker.

    6. The Brass Thumb Stud and Barrel Spacers are a good contrast to the Smoke Gray Liners. I'm wondering if they will develop a patina over time.

All in all I like the Foray 698-1901. I' think I'll be tossing it in my pocket an carrying it as a backup EDC for a while to get it broken in and see how things change  from use. Its going to see more time in my pocket than my 698 and 698-181 Foray GC that's for sure!

Oh and a special shout out and thank you to Chris for locating this one for me... Thank you Chris, greatly appreciated!

The last three or four Benchmades I've bought all have the pivot screws tightened more than the earlier ones - I just loosen them very slightly to make them open like the older models.

I like to "work" my new BMKs in a bit before adjusting the pivot or even oiling. Seems as though getting the phosphor washers "meshing" with the blade and liners makes for a smoother operation after a bit of breakin. IMHO

I know I can tear it apart and polish the washers, blade tang and liners but I prefer a bit of break-in to see how well the knife operates from the factory. If it remains tight and rough (rare) I polish things. JMHO
