Sharpmaker...advice please
The Sharpmaker looks pretty popular. I'm considering it. I want to adequately and efficiently maintain my 15085 s30v blade. I have some very fine lapping films to use too, but need to get stropping blocks. Thinking about getting some glass cut for that. Anyway, please share your thoughts on the sharpmaker. Do they have real fine stones available for it? Thank you...

Benchmade doesn’t sell that product. You have the wrong forum.

Probably a dumb question anyway..."What's the best sharpener for me?" I probably won't be real satisfied until I can spend $1000 on a sharpener and accessories (never happen) so I may just have to get over the whole idea and just rely on Benchmade to maintain the blade.

Although it's not a Benchmade product, a lot of us use sharpmakers to touch up our edges. They're not great for reprofiling but can renew a lightly used edge fairly fast. Stropping is by far the best way in between uses to keep your edge hair popping. If you need to reprofile your edge I'd recommend the lansky diamond guided system. It's fairly inexpensive and does a good job staying true so long as you follow the directions. There's lots of great YouTube videos to help with how to use it correctly.

I think I will learn what I can about the lapping films and stropping paste. I have the Worksharp GSS and two of the leather strops that fit it.

Used one for years, like ease of use. Now added stropping to finish off & touch ups. Stropping biggest discovery, love it results.
Good luck

I've owned a Sharpmaker for many years, and even though I maintain my primary knives with strops and own an EdgePro and Wicked Edge, I still use the sharpmaker when I need to maintain an edge when stropping doesn't work. It's my go-to unit before I have to dig out the WE. The one thing I don't like about the sharpmaker is the ceramics get loaded up pretty quickly and require cleaning often. Also even on a stable surface, the rods tend to move in the base, perhaps because my unit is so old and is loosening over time.

Thanks. I think I'll get one soon. They're not real expensive, and my knife is very sharp from the factory. I want to keep it that way, and I don't want to be afraid to use it and dull it so I need a good honing and stropping system.

I’ve been reading a lot and talked to a few people. I think my Worksharp GSS will restore the edge if needed, and stropping will polish. Thinking I might need something in between, just for edge maintenance. I can’t decide between the EP, KME and Sharpmaker.

So I bought the sharpmaker. I used it on all my pocket knives for practice. I just used it on my Benchmade for the first time. It was getting a little dull. I could not be more pleased. Using only the flat sides of the brown (medium) rods. Ten strokes per side on each edge it took less than 10 min and it is now the sharpest knife I have seen. Cuts hair without touching my arm, and whittles hair. That's fun.

I must be doing it wrong

I let the sharpener free stand on the counter. Not holding it. If it moves, that's too much pressure. Someone on their forum suggested that. It works.

Got to hold it down with one hand while sharpening with other. Don’t forget brass rods for safety

Second that about the brass safety rods.
Got a 1" cut down to the bone on my left hand a few years back. It's tempting to leave them off for quickness, but don't do it.

The no support method on the counter, keeps my hands safe. The knife got razor sharp in just a few minutes. I couldn't be more happy. If I run it through the fine and extra fine stones, it will probably polish the edge for me. I might not though, because I like the quick touch-ups and I really like having it sharp.

/|\ maybe you have cork or butcher block or concrete countertops.
My wife’s kitchen countertops are polished quartz & she keeps them clean, so the Sharpmaker would skid off the counter ( like a kid on a slip & slide) if I didn’t hold it down

They’re that fake marble stuff. Two rods stored in the base, gives it just the right amount of inertia, to sharpen my blade.
