    M4 Freek no question.

M4 & Axis beat M390 ball-bearing. That and the Ti gets beat up too quickly for my liking

Order the Freek. You'll love it! 👍

/|\ Have you seen the 810-1401?

    I’m not a big fan of M4 ( rust) & I do like M390 used on the 810-1401.

I think it best bang for your $$.

Well actually yes i have, although i have mostly looked into the Contego in M4 (i love m4) but yes rust does point me otherwise, I would purchase a knife with elmax if i could find one because its like m4 but better corrosion resistance with barely less edge retention. I dont know if m390 would be my type because im into really hard use with my knife...Yeah lmao says the man with a bugout, well if i wouldve known i couldve got the Freek 560 instead of the bugout i wouldve but i didnt see it in time no harm no foul, s30v isnt a soft steel and has held up to all the tasks i would preform on m4. this does include batoning, but when i baton i dont engage the lock so i don't break it.

I wouldn't mind a fixed Contego in M4. I'm happy with the fixed Contego in S30V, but the jimping on the folder was too much for me. I couldn't tell from the photos but i think the 810-1601 is the only folder that has none.

I recently picked up an Elmax knife from another Portland area manufacturer & love it

elmax and m4 are just great strong steels and i love being able to do vicious tasks with my knives and not worth about the steels breaking or losing their edge on a chippy hall of fame. the freek is just a beautiful knife and the m4 makes it so much better. but elmax knives are just difficult to find, when i get the money  i would buy a ZT 0561 in elmax if i could find a real one or if they went on sale again

btw i love the look of my bugout very much i just wish the knife and blade as a whole were thicker, not much a fan of the toothpick blade style but still a excellent knife. just still a little disappointed i hadn't paid attention i thought the freek (560) sold for like 145 or i would've bought it instead i hadn't known they were 120

The Bugout is a excellent lightweight knife and was designed as such. Toss it in a backpack and its at home for day hikes and the like. Not really a hard use knife or a toothpick. If you want to see a toothpick look at the 417 Fact family.

For heavier use pick up a 560BK-1 Freek or a 560BK-1801 Freek. Both use CPM-M4. They're a wee bit more than $120 though.

Thats what im thinking, i probably wont buy another spyderco outside the maxamet(for collection purposes) until a limited edition one comes out in a steel like m4, m390 etc. i want the DLT red PM2 Exclusive.

i was looking up tungsten carbide knives and well i was thinking about that as the knife i buy after this Freek and well... im not spending 250 on a knife that is a quarter the width of a bugout for a blade that will break if i put nearly any pressure on it, for the daily edc for me i live in the country so you can imagine all of the hard use that would come with being outdoors in the woods all the time for fun or hunting. i think this freek will suit me well any ideas on what sharpening system to buy? manual no automatics i like the fact that if the world went to hell i could still rely on something i dont need power for

I have been using Arkansas and ceramic stones/rods but I'm ready to go buy some modern tech to bring my blades back to razor sharp after a while of use.

I keep reading that the Wicked Edge is the way to go. They have a few options all of which are reasonably expensive. There are other knock offs that are cheaper but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the Pro-Pack III as it appears to give you just about everything you need to put a mirror finish, razor edge on a brick if need be.

    Nice choice!

I like 20CV and have a number of different MFRS knives in it. Holds a decent edge and isn't too bad to sharpen.

I haven't done business with National Knives but their feedback is 100%.

Lots of customization options out there for the XM Series...

Here is one to Ti it up!...

We all have different tastes. I am not a fanboy of Rick’s designs or execution of those designs. I do think the Ti accessories sold to customize you Knife is a great idea.

i love the solidity (if thats even a word) of the knife, i want the "end of the world pocket knife" its basic and its near indestructibe, especially when i get the titanium on there, im thinking about replacing the teflon washers with phosphorus bronze and the front handle scales with Titanium instead of G10

    Crazy talk.

We are drifting further and further apart, you and I. It's like I don't even know who you are anymore..

Difference in taste understood. What is your issue w/ the execution? I can't speak to any XM other than this Gen 6..the Firetac I have is about perfectly executed. This XM is flawless w/ the best tolerances I've seen thus far from any production folder. I've never owned a custom and have had 1/2 dozen CRK's.

Machined hardware in house..how many manufacturers do that? How many custom makers do that? No many, I think.

If you haven't handled a Gen 6, well.. your execution argument don't stand..not w/ this example anyway.

Comrade, if you are serious about that purchase..you will not be dissapointed, whatsoever.

I've stayed away from the brand for many reasons over the years...Finally pulled the trigger on an XM 18 3.5..I couldn't be happier.

Post pics if you end up getting one.

/|\, TR, again to each his own.

I didn’t like the feel of his customs I got to pick up at Knife Shows several years ago. I prefer customs of others. Now that feel carried over to the factory models I’ve gotten to hold (just not impressed ). If you’re  shelling out $450 the knife should wow you & make you feel good about putting it in your pocket.

Again personnel taste, I’m not keen on:

    1) metal handles. Don’t like feel, they scratch, can be slippery compared to G10 & CF with orange peel finish.

    2) the locking system. I’m not crazy about my Proxy or custom Terzuola Athena

    3) I’m weight to blade length sensitive. I am a fan of Emerson’s CQC8. I rather carry one of my factory models with Ti liners & G10 handles over the custom CQC8 which is a tank. Just like I like my 940-1 over the 940 with Ti handles Those Ti handles  add so much weight it feels like a different knife than even the basic 940 with Al handles.

    Right on, Bill.

Mistook your dislike on execution as issue w/ tolerance/F+F.

The grinds on Hinderer's customs look great..

But, yea..preference, I understand... I would never buy another knife in S30V/S35V..or vn, or whatever..ever again..certainly not a $450+ knife..but, like you state, it's just preference.

/|\ As respects S30v, really wasn’t very happy with Benchmade's S30v so much preferred my 940’s with D2 ) nice toothy edge). Well 18 to 24 months ago I got strops. Stropping my S30v on 940’s gets rid of wire edge & sharpness is very impressiveI like it!

Stropping make difference on 154 & S90v too. Still prefer toothy edge on D2.

Yes I strop 154 & S30v more often than S90v but it’s so easy couple of passes on strop ( less than 5 minutes to pull out strop,  set up, strop & pack up).😀

little confusion before i make any final decisions, XM18 Harpoon Spanto s35vn(https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hinde...f:g:FqYAAOSwdzBcrN7E)

    or

XM18 Slicer grind or a spear point no flipper cpm20cv (https://www.ebay.com/itm/Hinde...Priority!66712!US!-1)

I like the no flipper and the 20cv but i dont like spear points i like the beefyness on the spine of the blade on the harpoon spanto and the tanto piercing tip part but i dont want to compensate at the cost of cpm 20cv i can delete the flipper easy no problem but the blade steel is whats gets me. any thoughts?
