806bk901 blade snapped
Last night I snapped the blade of my favorite all time model an 806bk901. My guess is Benchmade doesn’t have a replacement blade for this knife. I was centering it with the blade in one hand and it snapped off in my hand. My guess is there was a heat treat issue they couldn’t see with it being a coated blade. If anyone has a spare afck blade for an axis model I’d really appreciate it. Sick to my stomach right now. This knife is irreplaceable.

Man that sucks

/|\ Bummer, hope you find a replacement blade.
Hey Jasonwhat is laying around in BKC ’s shelves that fit?

It doesn't sound like much, unfortunately

I'm looking into it with Ryan though.

I've cranked on AFCK blades pretty damn hard and never had that happen. Hell, I've probably centered that very blade. My guess, as well, is that there almost certainly was a defect on the molecular level that would allow the blade to snap like that. Those photos make me sick to my stomach.
A pristine -901 forever out of circulation. Hopefully, BM's stellar, world-class customer service will be able to help you in some form or fashion.

Thanks Jason anything that would fit would work at this point. I can’t beleive this happened.

Heat treatment would not cause and/or show a material defect. Unless the blade was made of two materials with different thermal coefficients, or one material had a non fusion area. There was a stress riser, probably opened to the surface by addition of hole. A heat treat issue would be a brittle blade. I am assuming that this knife is not new in box & has had some use. I would think a brittle knife would have broken sooner. Coating would be added post heat treat, i believe
I would be interested in seeing the two broken edges side by side. If you could upload a high quality photo, please. This will probably show a bit more about what happened. This is D2?
D2 has a charpy of 21 ft.-lb. at a hardness of 60 HRC. Similar to M2. Typically no side bend info
Just my opinion

No this is M4 and I’ve showed some reputable custom makers that would disagree with your statement.

The hole was put in before heat treat or did I misread what you were trying to say? This knife looks nib to me

I've got a strong stomach, but damn..I feel your pain in my stomach. Condolences.
Dead straight through the thumb hole..go figure.
Be thankful you didn't have to have that blade removed from you hand..
As sre stated, that particular was probably stressed more w/ lateral loads by previous owners trying to center, on an example that probably would drift, for whatever reason, off center...than any load during actual intended use. Stressed then eventually snapped.
If anyone can make it right, BM's CS can, honestly second to none. I've seen a few rabbits pulled..They will sort you out one way or another.

Matt this knife has lived a safe queen life until I recently decided I needed an 806bk901 to carry. Even at that it’s gone for a few rides in my pocket and hardly done anything. This is an odd one for sure...

What statements are questionable?
I have to admit i have no experience in blade metallurgical quality control. But i do have a few decades of metallurgical QC/QA in nuclear, petro chemical, areospace, structural steel & bridges.
A side by side photo of edges would tell a lot.

It's a damn crying shame. I'd probably have put my fist through a wall.

The knife never saw any use.
I'd like to hear MobileFireLord's thoughts on the incident. He's a steel head and I'm sure he'll have something to say.

The chances of a heat treat causing 1 blade out of 250 to be brittle is minimal. I would think if it was an issue with the lot, it would have been brought up before.
A photo of the broken surfaces, side by side, would probably be very telling.

Ouch
That hurts.
Hopefully a BKC Christmas comes to you.
Good luck

Yes I would have liked to run a fist through my wall. That being said I recently had hand surgery and don’t want to go through that again 🤦🏻♂️

Wow, this is tragic. Sorry to see this, barcattleco, it makes my stomach hurt.
I wonder if the blade could be welded?0 -
Could be welded, but probably cheaper to acquire a new one.
Strip, anneal, weld, profile & straighten, heat treat, coat. Losing all Benchmade markings. Writing an appropriate welding procedure or have one engineered. Finding a competent welder. I'm sure many would say they could do it, but few could correctly. After all of that i would probably also want a radiograph of the weld.

That knife was nib looking to me. How much force are you fellas putting on your blades to center them. I’m not putting hardly any. Makes me think this is just a freek Occurance and blade was cut out of an area of the sheet of steel that had a micro flaw or inconsistent micro structure in the steel right where that blade was cut.. add the thumb hole and you have a ticking time bomb.. I bet it just surprised and shocked the hell out of you when that blade snapped. It’s a bummer but I’d like to think bkc will take care of you in some fashion. Like I said that’s a a nib knife and a rare bird at that so it’s not like you overstressed or abused it.. bkc should cut you a blade if they don’t have one on the shelf. IMHO . It’s m-4 after all.. I’m sure they have some laying around.. they should be able to recreate your OG blade without too much trouble.. this just isn’t good at all..

damn, that's a pretty rough circumstance; an unsullied example no less. hug your m4 afck's when you get home. if bkc can pull something off it'd be fairly epic.

raise one to the departed homey, gents...

Mmmmmk so I talked with Ryan. Sounds like you contacted him a little bit earlier?
If you don't mind, go ahead and send it in to his attention, then he and I will connect to do a little bit of discovery work and see what we can do to take care of ya.
Ready? Break.

Very cool

Ouch.
Did there happen to be a line where the laser started/ended for the thumbhole?

It will be interesting to see what Jason and Ryan discover. (I think Jimmy should be I included on the forensic team. An impartial fellow Ferverite will keep everybody honest).😎

Oh I'm just going to be the point person with Ryan. I'm planning to get all scientific on this thang, so I need the research crew. SMEs, Rockwell testers, maybe some chemical composition testing?? You don't even know!

The knife will be headed to benchmade soon. It’s not looking good for an existing blade. She may be done 😔 That being said I know benchmade will always go above and beyond for their customers. Unfortunately, this is one of the irreplaceable knives that may have met its fate. I hope to somehow find another should it be done. Thanks for the sympathy I know there’s only a handful of people in the world that understand the values we put on certain blades. I happen to put this one over all the gold class models I owned. It was one of benchmades finest. Thank you Jason and Ryan for getting involved. Here’s some close up photos of the break.
