890 Torrent
I just traded for one of these, and going back a couple of years, this quote came from a Forumite and sums it up:
"I'm pleased with my 890. I see it as a larger gent's knife. More for looks and less for hard use. I like its simple rustic styling along with the nicely contoured G10 scales. The assisted opening works well and is a fun addition."
Yes this is tip down. No it's not Axis. Yes the scales are not grippy. Yes the clip is bright. No I can't spine whack it. Yes the edge is sharp and bevels even. And yes the Nitrous is smooth. Yes it's light. And yes it's simple.
Maybe things do get better with age and practice. (I can attest to that...)
But seriously, this is a nice knife. I owned one a couple of years ago and after many knives have passed across my desk I forget that this one is still in the catalog and in production.
I would not classify this as a heavy user like the 810, but for normal slicing jobs and with more class than brass, this one is worth considering.

Thanks for that Joe
I have been seriously considering picking one of these up recently, the features just seem to push all the right buttons for me.0 -
The Gold Class Torrent really had me thinking...failed to pull the trigger though...not an Axis. 0 -
I have had the 890 for quite awhile and never carry it. I like the deep pocket clip but it's on the wrong end. Also I am not super fond of the linerlock. It is a fine knife and very nice looking. I was super excited about it when it first came out and couldn't wait to get one, but when I did it was just not that exciting. I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with it. It would be nice with the m390 blade the gold class has! 0 -
I'm not a big fan of the liner lock either. I prefer the Axis over envy thing else n 0 -
It's all good. I must have found a good one, no problems at all. Switching tip up/down is easy.
My first real folder was a '99 EKI CQC7 and actually switching to the Axis and liking it took some time.
One of the neatest tricks on this folder and others like the 760 is that adjustable hex stop pin, which makes the knife live longer; as the lock wears we can fix the play ourselves.0 -
I am often very tempted by the 890 gold class but that aluminum just gets to me.... I would almost take the gold class blade and put it on the g10 handle. The sculpted g10 is one of the nicest parts of the regular 890 0 -
thanks for your words about the torrent joe !
i really like the design on this knife ... never pull the trigger tough ... because of the steel mainly i suppose ... the gold class looks good to me . don't really know for how much you can find one of those ?0 -
I've seen the standard 890 on line for ~110 USD. PM me if you want to know where.
The gold 890 is surprisingly reasonable too, well under 300...0 -
the gold class 890 is a bargain really. probably one of the lowest price gold class knives and not the least material wise, either 0 -
When Roger donated the 890 and 585 for the passaround a couple years ago, I liked the Torrent except for the right-hand-only design. If they had a left-handed version of it, I would have gotten one. As it is, I'm an Axis-only guy due to my southpaw-ness (Axis and my lefty mini-AFCK...). 0 -
I have handled one a few times. it is very nice and no. not as hard use as an 810. but a very capable cutting tool.
I did a pretty good reveiw a couple years back. doubt i could find it. for a liner look this was an amazing knife. i had no question about it's safty.
Yes, i do prefer axis locks. but that knife is a worthy edc consideration.
to the clip being tip down. i actually enjoy knives like that from time to time. just for the change up.
there must be some greater resason other than,it hangs tip down, on why folks dislike it.
i can draw and open the knife as effectively as i can a tip up knife.0 -
The Torrent has been on my 'buy' list for some time, and will likely be my next regular production knife purchase.
As far as the tip up/down concerns, my personal preference has always been tip down.
This dates back many, many years to a time before I knew the joy of having a quality knife. There was an incident where I had an extremely close call with a poorly made knife that was being carried in the tip up position and it came partially open in my pocket without being aware of it until I jammed my hand in my pocket. Due to some extremely fortunate circumstances I was uninjured but it could have been very bad.
It took many years, decades in fact, until I could ever carry a knife tip up again. And even know there are very few knives that I trust tip up, 99% of which are BM's...0 -
The 890 maybe doesnt have Axis-lock but its still a great quality knife for the price its available in retail. Its much more durable when it goes for the assisted opening (no spring that can brake like torsion bar in Kershaw knives . A buddy of mine showed me this knife and i was amazed how smooth the mechanics are and how good its cuts thanks to the blades profile. It became one of top must buy knives for the comming months.

The 890 is a great knife Rico, very smooth once through a little break in period as normal. Hope you get one!0 -

The 890 is a nice knife. Like has been stated the tip up carry would make it even nicer. I would like to get a g10 handle with a m390 blade for a user. 0 -

Good call.
It's already got the G-10 (Or were you intending textured G-10?), now all it needs is M390 to take it from being a great knife to a truly excellent knife...
And I just love that polished deep carry clip. Too bad it doesn't fit on other BMs...

no just the standard g10. I started to switch the m390 blade off a gold class 890 onto the standard 890 handle but never got around to finishing. I thought that'd be a very nice carry knife. 0 -
ahhh, got ya.
Tell you what, send me that GC and I'll try out the blade in mine...
0 -
that's alright... I'll work on it one of these days again

Awww, durn.
Now am wishing I had bought an 890 GC when I had the chance (and the funds)...0 -
I'll make you a trade of one

the 890 fits my hand like no other knife, the nitrous assist works great. but i dont get the rugged ready for work feeling from it, i carry it once in a while on the weekends. 0 -
Interesting point joel. I would have to agree with that.
Whether or not it is a super tough working knife, it doesn't really feel like it to me either. I doesn't feel like a dress up type knife either though. It's sort of half way between type of thing0 -

It might not feel like a tough knife because of its relatively thin blade, although people don't complain about the thin blade of the 710. I think the 890 would stand up to what most people would want from it.
I think the knife deserves better blade steel though.
I like the knife and I want one. I've been searching for a long time, the ones I find that are new are too expensive. I've found a number for sale used but the ones that I manage to just miss are the ones that go really cheap, the ones that I find and try to buy seem to be significantly more expensive. I finally bought one a couple of weeks ago and when it arrived I found out that it had been ruined with serrations even though the seller did not say it had serrations and they used a photo of a different knife without serrations. I had to send it back so I'm back to being without my 890.0
