Knife recommendation..

Browsed the benchmade site, some great stuff.
I was actually in the market for a knife to give my son for his 10th birthday. Something that would last, hopefully to give to his son.
I came across the griptillian, I think the mini would be better suited for him. I have to admit, I will probably get one for myself. I carry some cheaper brands, have for years. Usually because I would lose them, or leave them. Anyway, I saw the custom laser etching and thought it would be perfect. Although, I would like to see a proof before I placed the order. I did email BM, and hope when they get back to work this week, I will hear something.
Thoughts? On the gift idea?

dj is on the money it will not be your last and the grip is a real good start.the laser work from BM. is real good had them put a hummingbird
on the wifes she loves it.

+10 to it won't be your last. Get one with the Axis lock thumb stud (as opposed to the thumb hole). This feature really shines on BM. I agree with the quality of BM. But until you have one for real in your hand it will blow your mind how well the axis lock works. My opinion, it is the best locking design out there. Welcome to the forum btw.

You know I am going to go against the trend here and suggest a 527 as a good starter, the Gipitillian's are OK but I have found the 527 even though it's 440 is a better knife IMO and they are the same money I think..

I went ahead and ordered him a mini grip.
Blue handles.
Can't wait.
I went down to the local gun store, where I saw listed as a benchmark dealer today to have a hands on, 4 guys working at the back counter, I was the only customer, I looked at the benchmarks they had for about 5 minutes in the case. Not so much as a greeting, I left. And will not be back.

It just seems to be the attitude of people at Gun Stores from what I have noticed, very rarely do you find what I would call good customer service and a happy face.

It really is a shame, but it is what it is and they are the way they are. You may as well just buy it online then, as you did and they lose the business..

My 12y.o. and 11y.o. both have mini-Grips. My 12y.o. is wanting a bigger knife for using with the Boy Scouts, but he won't give up his mini-Grip.

Mini grip, especially the Ritter version is one of my favorites. Love the size, the blade, and the axis lock.

I found another dealer in another town I was working in today.
Picked me up a mini, black/black blade/tanto.
I am really liking this knife even after only just buying it this afternoon.
My boy saw it tonight after I got home and asked, dad, when can I have a pocketknife. Little does he know...

We had a nice little talk about knives, being responsible and knife safety. I thought it went well, I let him fiddle with it for a bit. He was timid at first, then he felt a little confident about opening and closing it.
I can't wait to see the look on his face when he gets his.

Glad to see that you are taking the time to introduce him to knives and how to handle them, and almost as important - getting him something quality that you can both rely on to perform safely.

One of the online knife dealers used to send a dispenser pack of band-aids with their knives. It had all the dealer's contact info printed on it and was kind of a cool advertising idea. Believe me...the band-aids eventually all got used.

Maybe along with the knife you should give your boy a pack of band-aids and the advice that "Mothers don't really like to hear stories about us getting cut."

You can't go too wrong with that choice, a good Father and Son talk is a great idea also....

Got my son's knife in this past week. Quick turnaround!
BUT!
I was working out of town all week, he sees a box with my name on it with benchmark label, he opens it and looks inside.

I was a bit upset and disappointed because I wanted to be a birthday surprise. I did not tell my wife the knife was on it's way, heck I did not tell her I bought it.
Anyway...the knife looks great, he has to wait til January to get it...
Thanks benchmade, it id the perfect gift, exactly what I was looking for.
