I hope this isn't too much of a derailment. I imagine the larger goal is a Ritter Grip with a supersteel more on the stainless side of the spectrum (compared to the M2 and M4 releases).

So is M390 still the best available stainless supersteel? If we're effectively starting from scratch here (there aren't already plans in the pipe for another supersteel Ritter), would S90V or something else be a better selection than M390?

Anyway, I'd likely get two regardless of which stainless supersteel is used. One to use and one to keep on the shelf.

For the size of RSKs, I would say M390 is the best all around. S90V is more wear resistant, but less tougher than M390, or even S30V.

I would like to see S110V, but BKC has yet to release in quantity. M390 on the other hand, it has been available and many of the test done by many people to be all around super stainless steel at this point. I can see CPM-M4 is also a good candidate, but M390 is stainless after all.

Not having much experience with S90V I say M390 is my favorite steel hands down. However, Id buy a couple of each in any of those for mentioned steels. S90V, S110V, or M390.

I'm in for full size in either m390 or m4 for that matter. g10 would be welcome as well, but the steel is enough for me to shell out regardless. I'm still holding out hope we see a dealer run this year.

I'm more a fan of the non-stainless, hi carbon steels. I'd still buy the m390, but would more appreciate a new M4 with clear Cerakote or similar.

Ohhhh, tough question, full or mini, full or mini...

    Oh the decisions.

I'd buy the full, because I've got a 556 that is more like an old friend than just a tool in the pocket and I couldn't bear replacing it.

So the fullsize it would be, but I wouldn't carry it because the stupid hollow sounding plastic handles and end up buying a mini anyway.

Then I's never carry it beacuse I couldn't do without my 556, and order a set of custom scales for the full size from Keyman. But wouldn't carry it because it was to good looking.

And then I'd order a set of matching handles for the mini, just so I'd have a matching set.

Then I'd ralize that this was too good of a knife not to carry, so I'd order another full size with the plastic handles to carry.

    Wash, rinse, repeat, ad nauseum...

I would take 2-3 minis for sure.

I think M390 would sell well. Haven't had this steel in the Ritters. M4 was seen recently (though in small quantities).

I think BM could do both mini and full size and sell them out.

I'd take at least one of each...

Something like S90V would be fine too, but I think M390 is a lot more likely to happen, since Benchmade has used it a lot more than any comparable steels.

Sorry, I have nothing to contribute to your post or this thread right now.

Just wanted to say that is a great '70 mustang in your profile pic, is that yours?

If so, sharing a better picture (in the appropriate forum) is a requirement of continued membership here...

Not that big a fan of the Ritter variation that I would buy the tenth or eleventh Griptilian just for the steel.

Want my next Griptilian to have flat G-10 scales and M390, M4, whichever.

Fancy would be great, but would further drive up the price and complexity of the project, in turn reducing the number that could be sold or the possibility of getting this off the ground at all.

Plus, I prefer sculpted G10 over flat. Actually we've had a ton of sculpted G10. Despite my preference, seeing some flat would be interesting too. Regardless: once you're in the weeds of specialization, you're in the weeds of specialization.

Whatever happens, as long as something happens, I rest easy knowing that Grips are easily LEGO-ed. I've already got a set of Camp Perry scales waiting for its Ritter blade.

Definitely agree on interest in flat G10. I'd buy at least one of those just to see how it worked out. I like the sculpted G10 but it does make the knife kinda fat for some carry situations.

I agree with Po. This sounds like a nice new 551 configuration. It would be nice for flat G-10 if Benchmade would take a look at some of the following: Spyderco Manix 2, ZT 350 and Al Mar Shrike, all have flat G-10's and none of them are slippery.

If that is the case, BMC should offer DR blade in custom knife line up for Griptilian & Mini Griptilian.

    Or KW special.

Sure. As long as Benchmade makes reasonably-priced Ritter grip blades in a stainless supersteel, I don't care how it's packaged or sold. I'll even take flat G10.
    Razzer

Reality check though: currently only KW sells Doug Ritter Benchmades, so a KW-exclusive limited edition seems to be the most likely.

Yup. I was thinking to Frankenstein 551-1401 handle with DR RSK blade, if KW sells M390 blade.

Please correct me, but RSK1 doesn't have full liner, does it?

  • geocyclist
Yea, I agree, the BMC should at least offer the current DR S30V blades in the custom shop. Doug would get more sales, get a higher profit (I am guessing about this, not a fact), and more visibility.

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud, but you know, it may be possible that Griptilian being Mel Pardue design and BKC may not able to offer Doug Ritter blade in place. It could be the reason why KW is the dealer who offers it as 3rd party. Come to think about it, Ryan R.'s Death Grip mod handle is also offered by KW.

Having said that, if KW to run RSK, it may need to overcome 1000 number limit on full size, and mini independently...
