New (to me) Riftage 950
Some of you may know that I have been wanting to get my mitts on a 950. Well, thanks to loonybin, I am now the proud owner of the Rift you can see here - http://benchmadeforum.com/eve/...4020101#175004020101
Also, thanks to loonybin, I may now be a Riftaholic. This baby is fffiiinnneee. He acid etched the blade and dyed the scales and I am loving it.

Very nice! I really like the looks of the Rift. I did buy the Cutlery Shoppe exclusive. I will probably get a regular Rift next. That's pretty cool the way yours turned out. Don't be afraid to show some more pictures. 0 -
Like the handle color nice custom touch 0 -
I don't think the Rift gets quite as much love as it deserves; it really is a great design. It was also the first knife I'd seen or bought that had 'layered' G10; and the contouring of the handle exhibits the layering in a very attractive fashion. 0 -
Ah, finally the gathering of Rift aficionados.
I have been tinkerling with Rift, like jimping on four locations. I think DOAT did cross drill hole on liners, and Bill actually requested DOAT for this mod.
I would love to see Rift in either S110V or M390... Yeah...
I am, however look forward to try 808 Loco. It shows promise and will write up product review.0 -
MFL Rife is a good knife with potential to be great. The 3 modifications Benchmade should incorporate
1) Lighting hole : in addition to weight reduction, the real added value is it shifts the balance point (not tail heavy).
2) Traction grooves : for a thing rest like on the 94x's. Not traction grooves like on the 810 (810's traction grooves on liners should be removed except thumb rest should be like 94x's too)
3) Blade steel: M390 please. The 950-1401 steel an improvement but people make fun of handle color once past Halloween.
Really hoping KW. Is our White Knight uses the blue/ black G-10 with the above.
Regards Bill
PS to Benchmade on 810 can you please modify ( tone down)the traction grooves on liners & back spacer. The traction grips on the 710-1401 really comfortable and I believe would serve well on 810 as well.0 -
The Rift in M390 would be amazing. I would love to see it in that or S35V or S90V ...

I think someone has mentioned Black class knife to have M390 is rare (I guess exception being 810)
Without cross drilled liner, I have hesitated with 950-1401. Also, some liner jimping on thumb area on top and index area would be nice. Griptilian does this nicely. On 950, M390 or S110V steel would be fantastic.
I am hoping 808 to be Rift NX. May be I should call it "808 Rapture" if I like the handle and overall ergo.

I had lightening holes added to my 950-1401 by DOAT as well as all the other 950s even the CF model. I wouldn't do it myself, DOAT has tools & experience. Until Benchmade incorporates these improvements all my 950s & 810s are going to DOAT. On 810s DOAT has made me smooth G-10 back spacers to replace the metal ones, it also improves balance.
MFL, in another thread you mentioned a back spacer for 940-1 I am sure DOAT can make it for you as he made G-10 ones to go with G-10 handles

I'm glad you're loving it! I agree with most ideas here to upgrade the Rift. The lightening holes would be a good touch, and when I get my next one, I just may send it to DOAT as well. The thumb grooves would help traction, and M390 for the blade is a no brainer. Heck, even D2 would be enough of an improvement over 154CM. Had the 950-1401 not been orage/black, I just might have bought one. I contacted some of the bigger online Benchmade dealers about an exclusive Rift in M390, and Roger at Knifeworks was the only one who replied. 0
