Clear Scale Griptilian Bought today
Hi,I'm not new to the knife world but i am new to Benchmade. Today i picked up a clear scaled Griptilian at a local outdoor shop that is closing. It is a display model not intended for EDC. I recently read a post on this forum about these knifes. It covered mostly what the knife was for and where it came from. My questions are, is this knife hard to come by and what is the value on an item like this? I don't plan to sell because i have personally never seen one before. And BTW i picked this knife up for 4.00 USD

I have seen a bunch of them over the years on ebay and I think the average price was probably around $60 for the ones I'd seen anyway. I don't know the value now, but I know that $4 is a super good deal for pretty much anything from Benchmade 0 -
Four bucks is a great deal on anything BM! I'd pay that just to hold some of the super LE's and beautiful pieces they've made over the years. Welcome to the Forums and enjoy the knive! Grips are always a great knife to have a round. 0 -

Wow, that's an unbelievable price. Good deal for sure regardless of the condition.
Be warned though, I have heard numerous reports that the clear scales were very soft and easily prone to scratching and other damage. Haven't seen one myself, so I am only repeating what I have heard from others.
Question though, did your come with the blunt, unsharpened blade? or does yours have an edge?0 -
the knife has a 440c unsharpened blade.It has "safety blade for display purpose only" on the side of the blade. the blade almost looks complete other than not having an edge. But yeah the grips seem very weak. It has a few cracks around the bolt that holds the blade. I plan on putting it in the collection to show people. 0 -
They all came in unsharpened 440C blades, and cracks in the soft material are common. I would not mess with this, $4 was a great buy for a rare display knife showing how the Axis mechanism works. Welcome to the Forum 'TA'. 0 -

TXAggie, if you decide to put a durable, usable set of scales on the knife, I bet you could find someone here with extras. Guys have been replacing originals with expensive after-market Grip handles and I'm sure they have the old originals kicking around somewhere.

Apparently TXAggie bought one of those demo knives that is an actual Griptilian but the handle on his is clear plastic so you can see how the mechanism works. The clear plastic handle isn't strong enough to act as a real knife handle, so if he decides to convert it into a real knife he will need to change over to some real scales.quote:Dave wrote...OK, I'm pretty new here. Your guess is as good as mine would be. I wouldn't touch this item, it's more valuable as an historical piece, clear scales and unsharpened blade make it very collectable.0 -

thanks for all the replys guys. I will probly just spray paint the clear grips black as well as the blade then use it as a EDC....JK JK everybody. I think with yalls input i will store this one in the gun safe and take it out every so often to show friends. Thanks again for the help. I thought 4.00 was a steal for even a display Benchmade. The girl at the shop said "I hate that knife,it doesn't even cut anything" ill take 7.99.Everything in the shop was 50 percent off so i got it for 4.00. I had a big grin on my face as i walked out. 0 -

I am with you fastjan the scales may not be practical as a working knife, but it sounds to me like it would be very cool just to have in a collection...0 -
