Imagine having the VERY last 42 ever produced.

Kills me...I was working for Benchmade at the time...stopped in the factory store; Tye, who ran it at the time asked me, "There are 11 of these 42s left in my stock...you want any of them?!" Sigh, so hard to have such hindsight clarity.

Maybe, but I bought a lot of 940D2CF & 941D2CF back when they made 500 of each. I sent back 3 all late 400s as the CF wasn't flush to the Ti spacer. The one I chose to EDC was 452 as it wasn't as perfect as the others & I figured it would "wear in". Now I got #23 of the new 781 & it is perfectly machined & assembled, but I am reading others have blades that are off center. I am thinking maybe the production machines wear out & or assemblers get tire & later made tolrences aren't as exact as first made.
Just a counter point to consider.

I've seen variations in knives of the same model that allude to what you're saying Bill. I have two subrosas and they look very different from each other.

Also would almost be like the Prototypes. I have a few but what does it really mean to be labeled prototype? Then they release a first run or it is a prototype of a limited but isn't counted in the limited run. If they did number them than would Les keep the last one like he does with #1 of some of the Gold Class?
