It would be easier to help you if you could post a picture. The tip could have heated up while they were putting the edge on. If not really dark or covering a large area you should not have much problems with the heat treat. If it bothers you call the dealer or Benchmade and see what can be done to fix it. Benchmade customer service has not let me down on the few occasions I have had to call them.

As darrenmh said a picture would help. It depends on how much area is discolored. If it is just on the edge it should not be an issue. One sharpening will take care of it. Sometimes you need to remove a few thousandths, after that you should be good. But if it is a large area it could be a problem.

Not sure how much of the tip is effected, but there is reason for hope.

The discoloration may be a surface issue. A good polishing may remove it, if so.

154CM is an air hardening steel I believe, so even if the tip was heated red hot, chances are the crystal structure was not entirely altered, and even if it was, a softer tip would merely be spring hardness, making it much tougher, which is not necessarily a bad thing for a tip. So the knife may well still be a good cutting tool.

    Thank you for any advice!

What color is it? Not bloodred I hope.

Looks like heat treat. I am no expert here. If you can do without it you can always mail to BM for analysis. If it is a problem I would think they would gladly replace the blade.

That looks like it happened when they put the edge on it. That is a really thin tip and it looks like it got a little warm. If it is only just on the surface and comes off like first pass on a stone I would say the temper is still OK. But Benchmade seems to be very good about QC and might want to know about things like this happening and getting out of the factory.

Hi Barry, I had a 746 with the same problem and when I brought it to BM they said it may have been a sharpening issue. They switched out the blade and I was happy with that. Customer service at BM is GREAT! Also, welcome to the forum.

From the pic it doesn't look that bad. Try use some Flitz and if that doesn't work I would send it in.

Agreed, that is definately overheated from putting the edge on.

Once it hits blue, the temper is gone from that section - which fortunately looks quite small, but is right at the tip. Does the spine of the blade in that area show a similar discolouring?

If it does, IMHO you have two options:

Sharpen the living heck out of it, especially at the tip. And I don't mean just refresh the edge on it - really sharpen it, take off enough material to get down to the harder steel

Send it in the BM for a replacement blade.

If the spine of the blade at the tip is not discoloured then it shouldn't be bad. A good sharpening will resolve it.

I agree also. It looks like a little discoloring from the sharpening. Touching up the edge should be ok, but it's fail-safe to send it in to us for inspection if you like.

Personally,if you are going to use the knife then I would not worry about it. Dose not look like there will be any issues. I would not want to part with it by sending it to BM. If the tip was to end up breaking then you will have to send it in anyway.
