Custom anodized Presidio -- reassembled!
So, my wife sent off the scales on my 520bk-1101 for some custom anodizing as my Christmas present. Since my wife is the artistic one, she went a step farther than I was thinking (I was just going to get a solid color). I wanted a color that will make the knife stand out if I drop it when camping/hunting so it will be easier to find than all-black, but I couldn't decide, so she decided to incorporate both:
With the black blade and all-black hardware, I think this is going to look pretty sharp. It will definitely serve the function I intend, that's for sure!
They were sent to Kent Aldridge of Mad-Jac's Finishing & Archery. He got them on the afternoon of the 15th (a Saturday), and he finished them up on Christmas Eve. Pretty darn quick, considering he was having some issues with getting the colors to blend.
I can't wait to get them back!

This weekend or next week. It took four days to get there, so expecting four days back. I'm impressed with Kent's turnaround time: basically one business week -- right before Christmas!0 -

I made my -1101 a user on day one. I was getting it recolored specifically so it would be easier to find when I do use it. Granted, I won't be camping for a few months, but I'll have no problem using it around the house, yard, etc.0 -

I will when they get here. My wife got an email today from Kent that he lost the envelope with our address and check -- it ended up trashed with the Christmas stuff. He said "I hate to admit that I had done such a stupid thing. Anyway the check is lost as well so this one is on me and if I should happen to run across it I will burn the check and let you know. Great work and no charge! Can't beat that for a Christmas present. With the holiday, I'm guessing they won't go out until Wednesday. I predict they'll get here Saturday.
He does quite a bit with his business -- bow risers, cams, cam modules, sight parts, knife scales, bow releases and other stuff, so there is bound to be a slip up on occasion. How a guy handles it is what makes or breaks a business, and I'd say he's handling it the right way.0 -
OK, scales are here and the knife is reassembled. I have to say they look even better than the pic that Kent sent my wife! They were packed more securely than anything I have ever seen:
Yes, they were wrapped in paper, vaccuum sealed, and then wrapped in a ton of bubble wrap and stuffed into a small flat rate priority box.
Once on the knife, the black blade and hardware really stands out against the scales. I like!

The finish is very well done. It doesn't have the "chalky" feel that others mentioned the stock scales have (I never noticed that feel, though), but they are not slick at all. The colors are even without blotches, and the orange and green blend well. In all, I'm very happy and won't hesitate to give Kent more business in the future. In fact, I'm planning on sending my 2nd son's bow, and possibly my 3rd son's bow, to him for some work in the spring.0 -
I've always liked bright colors on knives with black blades and parts. Looks pretty sick to me. 0 -
I agree bright colors do look best with black blades, it makes for a nice contrast.

and that was the idea! If I had wanted fancy/dressy/pretty/etc., I would have gone with deep blue or red. I wanted hi-viz as this is definitely a user knife. I know toxic green (or radioactive snot green as my wife calls it) and/or blaze orange aren't everyone's cup of tea, and mixing both on the same knife can seem... garish, it fits the intended purpose perfectly.0 -
They actually make that combo in layered G10... just in case you ever want to make something to match. 0
