Poll: M390 vs M4
This 2 steels seems to be in the top 2 of the Benchmade Steels at least for the moment... which one you prefer?

Actually either , but if I have to choose...........M-4 0 -
Easy choice for me.
I like them both and believe the difference between them performance-wise is so minimal it can be safely ignored.
However M390 I can get in uncoated satin finish, so it gets the thumbs up from me.0 -
From the LFTi to my 940-121, M4 kicks a! She holds an edge very long - especially after skinning boar
Havn't had enough experience with M390
Both are prob the top of their classes (stainless/carbon)0 -
I get careless sometimes... for more or less equal performance, I'll take the stainless. 0 -
Depends more on the knife, if its more of an EDC/Slicer I'd say M390 for the slight boost in edge holding and corrosion resistance, if its more of a hard use knife (275 Adamas/810 Contego) then I like the extra toughness of CPM-M4 0 -
I have a AFCK in M4 and a TSEK in M390, both users.
My impression is that the M390 takes a scary razor edge better and holds it better, it seems a bit harder to sharpen, the honing stones seem to glide over it like glass and there is less residue on the stone for the same effort.0 -
Satin? M390
Black blade? M4
So, I did not vote.0 -

same for me, except that I prefer uncoated blades, so my vote goes to M390.
But if, for example, we were talking about an LE that only comes with a black blade, I would rather have M4.0 -
I,d settle for Cerakote anything super steel. 0 -
Voted M4, but didnt see the "black" part.
Uncoated / polished or Satin M4 got my vote.0 -
i don't care for coated or not ...
M4 for me !0 -
Cerakote M4 for coated blade.
Stainless M390 for satin blade.
I prefer both equally, so I didn't vote.0 -
I prefer satin finish blades, so I voted for M390, plus the stainless component makes maintenance & care easier.
If it only comes in a black blade, then I'll take M4. (the clear Cerakote 810 could be M390 and that would be perfect).0 -
M390 Please!
But if you wanted to stay American then S90V or CTS204P and 20CP
0 -
Boy, that's a real coin toss...went with M390 for the corrosion resistance.
I used to see the M-2 or 154CM choice as a choice between corrosion resistance and toughness, but I don't know if that is still really the choice when it comes to M390.
Anyway, it was just a choice between fabulous and wonderful for me.0 -
looks like the M390 its the winner 6 to 4,
not by much.
Crucible could do a M4 stainless, will be a winner.0 -
Unfortunately, if they make it stainless it will no longer be M4. 0 -
I have a thing for M4... to me it seems like it holds an edge better. This could just be the geometry of the knives I have the two steels on, but I'm not sure. It's just a total gut feeling that M4 is better edge retention. Also benchmade has made uncoated M4 before, perhaps they'll do it again someday.
Also the 210-83 is uncoated M4 if I'm not mistaken as well.0 -
For a pocket edc knife, I strongly prefer a true stainless steel. It makes life so much easier. 0 -

I've been using M4 for 2 1/2 years now (beach days, cutting citric fruits, watermelon, the list could go on), and after every use its natural for me to wipe the blade down (with napkin or on pants) - anyways, I've *never had one rust spot form on me, not once - with M4 (D2 yes lol).
And I don't live in that dry of an environment either..
M4 is great stuff, I'm sure ten years down the line it will be where S30V is now, and I used to think that was the best.. Honesty though, if u gave me one S30V blade for the rest of my life, it would most likely last.
We are to picky with steels - me being one of the pickiest!

One thing about me being an M4 freak is I know when it's not the right choice. About an hour ago I went out to cut free a bunch of sprinkler heads while the water is running. It's pretty wet work. Which of my 25 or so M4 knives did I use? None...I grabbed an S30V Military.

quick question, has BM made ANY knives with S90V?0 -
Don't believe so
I'm sure they've tested it though, prob figuring out the Heat treatment
