Thoughts on a new 710
What do you think about re-designing the 710 to have an open back-strap? eg Stryker style. I believe the open handle design improves the reliability function and ensures effective and easy cleaning.

I prefer the looks of an open design. That's why the first thing I usually do with a new 710 is to remove the back-spacer and replace it with standoffs. I think Benchmade repair will do that for you upon request...but it's a pretty easy change to make on your own.quote:Originally posted by Shanty:

I a backspacer guy myself. Nothing against an open back on a lightweight knife, but on something formidable, I like the mass. And you can do cool stuff with back spacers, make em with some shape, like on the Barages and Volli, or make them out of something interesting like contrasting color material.
That being said, I am currently carrying a 730-1501 which has an open back with standoffs. The knife is really light, which I'm liking a lot. So I can go either way in the right application.
My only 710 right now has a custom full back spacer by Keyman, and it is really cool. Still pretty light too.
Luckily customizing with standoffs is easy too.0 -
Some good points raised. I have never stripped apart a benchmade axis so I might have to experiment.

We do that - pimping the 710 with Keyman scales
It does not get no better --

I'll pass on "pimping". Must be a U.S thing. But I am happy to experiment with spacers and washers to replace grips/scales and create a 710 without a backstrap.

Though I like the easy cleaning on open backs, I kind of disliked that they hurt my hand a bit more during long/excessive use on the 710.
Solution: a shortened back spacer that only closes the rear part of the handle, similar to the Sequel. It didn't hurt anymore and looked much better than the full spacer. Unfortunately I lost that completely black 710-801... (swapped the scales for regular ones)
PS.: Most LEs or exclusives already had barrell spacers instead of back spacers - if you want the open back, just go for an LE/exclusive.0 -
Well, 710 being one of the first to have AXIS lock, I think we should leave as is.
May be there should be 711? with recent AXIS lock that can come out and have more improvement on design. After seeing Keyman's scales, I feel my 710-1401 is way too slipply.0 -

Recent AXIS lock? There are two versions?

That's 7-11, with the slushies.
But, yeah, I guess it would need to be a 701 or something.

Any of you guys that replaced your backspacer still have it? I'm looking to go back to stock scales but I don't have the backspacer anymore. I'd buy it off ya if you still have it. Thanks. 0 -
I'll look when I get some time this weekend...If I can find one, I'll send it to you. quote:Originally posted by glock1963:
