Omega springs.
Any chance of them being available for purchase?
I would be willing to pay the cost of what would normally be the shipping for warranty repair / lifesharp services.
I know how to make replacement springs, but to be honest I'd rather have a couple sets at my immediate disposal rather than spend the time in shipping or in the time of running to the music store to grab string.
I know that normally Omega Springs aren't sent out, but I figure the worst case in asking is that you guys say no.

We are unable to send out internal components, which includes springs, as it requires disassembly of the knife thus voiding your warranty. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause. 0 -
Please excuse my ignorance but what is an Omega Spring...

All Axis based knives have two Omega springs T. If you look you see them on each side by the release tabs. They curve back into the frame and provide the tension needed to both retain and release the blade. 0 -

What if we don't care about voiding the warranty, or if someone lives overseas where sending the knife would be quite expensive? How about signing a waiver to send in and get springs stating that we know the warranty will be void?0 -

Ok thanks Joe...

I don't think the warranty on any if my knives is valid, you guys make them robust and easily taken apart, I polish washers, tangs, I've polished my old 940 and truthfully if its only a question of my knives being under warranty that would prohibit you guys from sending me omega springs, I'll sign a waiver.
On the other hand I know customer service only goes so far and in all my time using Benchmade knives I've yet to have an omega spring break. The only thing that's broken was the spring on my 3550, but I bought a new one and replaced it myself.

I'm on the 3550 myself, sent ol faithful in a few weeks ago and anxiously awaiting its return, have a few more "like minded individuals" stepping in to fill the void while its at the "spa" but have only had issues with that model, though not complaining with its extreme use, but would still like to be able to just do a quick swap myself and avoid all the middleman return stuff. 0 -
Yep, I think the very first time I opened my 3550 all those years ago it probably took 30 minutes to get the spring and blade correctly placed. After that it was a breeze. Axis locks are childs play... I think at one point I tore it apart just to make a picture year down and reassembly post. 0 -

IMO, I still think that it would be a good idea to be able to have some extra's of them, they are the most likely thing to fail and having some replacements on hand seems like a very good idea to me..

Ditto, I think BM could sell them easily... and easily track people who order more than a couple dozen. It's not like there's a shortage of fakes and knockoffs or manufacturers who ignore IP rights that need BM springs.
I can see blades... kinda... I wouldn't mind buying a couple backup blades, and I can see how higher value items like blades would be at the companys discretion... but omega springs... I don't see it.0 -

I think the idea of extra Blades is a long shot, but I have always said that with some Limited Editions and extra PE would be a great idea for those wanting to EDC them.
But with Omega Springs there should be an extra set available for the knife , if for nothing else as a backup for emergency repairs when you can't get it back to Benchmade for repair.0 -
How about replacement springs for the AXIS Assist models?
I have a broken 585 & 580.
To make them open and close again I had to completely dissemble and remove broken spring.
Now they operate as non-assisted models with Valox handles.
I know! I could have sent them in to BKC for service.
Sometimes it’s easier and less expensive to DIY.0 -
Yeah, I don't know the origin of the difference between Kershaw and Benchmade policies for sending out parts. 0 -
Springless Barrage's.
Poor Springless Barrage's. Having to live a life of regular Axis knives among a world of Assisted Openers.
Still rock solid lock-up.

Where these mods or did the springs break? 0 -

580 (Large) was purchased as soon as this model was released. It had been opened and closed thousands of times. It broke 2 weeks ago. Still works great as a manual Axis.
585 (Small) I was responsible for the broken spring.
Springs are NOT an issue with these models. The Axis assist is an outstanding design.0 -
Well thanks to Joe and this thread, I now know the correct term for what I use to call Axis Lock Springs and that is Omega Springs..
Now I have had one of them fail on my favorite knife my 525-701 today, noting that one spring failing is not a Catastrophic Failure as the knife will still function with only one.
The knife is now 6 years old and is my most used knife so one must be fair, but a very good question in my mind now is what if you are long term in the field and this happened.
The knife will need to go into Benchmade for repair, but the idea of a simple spare part does come to my mind now, as does the idea of Frame Locks....

If it's a concern for you, you could ask Skimo how he makes his own Omega springs out of piano wire. He says they work great.
They're a maintenance item like a timing belt on an OHC engine...which probably lasts 120,000 miles but they recommend you change them at about 60,000 to 75,000 just to be safe. This probably seems like a poor comparison, but if you think about it, you used your 525-701 pretty heavily for over 6 years and you lost one of the two omega springs. Well, if you drove a car pretty heavily for 6 years you'd probably be in the range of losing your timing belt as well. So, to me, I don't worry much about either one on a daily basis. After 5 or 6 years of heavy use I do worry about both, so I get them changed.

Hi im new to the forums, trying to find out how to get some support from Benchmade, i have a 520 Presidio only 3 weeks old, the Omega spring has broken on one side, naturally i was very disappointed more so when i contacted Benchmade via E-mail & by submitting a form online but i have had no reply, its been roughly 2 1/2 weeks. I live in Australia not sure if Benchmade support customers outside the USA.
Any advice would be awesome!!!0 -
Zenna, we have read of Axis knives, like your 520 being confiscated by Australian Customs. I can't recall their justification for it, but that might prevent you being able to just ship the knife back for a warranty repair.
Did you buy your 520 at a Benchmade dealer in Australia? I have been told that there is one dealer there who sells Benchmades, but whether they are an authorized dealer is unknown to me. If there is such a dealer, I wonder how he gets around the Customs restrictions.
Sorry to ramble on here, but you say that one omega spring is broken. Did you open the knife an see the broken spring? The reason I ask that is that an omega spring usually hooks around the Axis bar on one end, and on the other end it hooks through a hole in the liners. I have taken off omega springs before to clean the inside of the knife and while re-assembling I didn't quite have the spring hooked properly in the hole and it came out...making it feel like the spring had broken when in fact, all I had to do was be more careful and re-hook it properly through the spring hole. I'm not suggesting that you open the knife, but if you have already done so, that's a whole other matter.
If your spring is broken, I am hopeful that in your special circumstances that Benchmade would just send you a set of omega springs. You might have to call them at Benchmade repair to find out.0 -

Call 'em. They're really good about answering the phone. They might or might not have an authorized repair place down under. You could also just print off the warranty form, mail the knife... and wait.
And... welcome to the forum!

BM will treat their overseas customers with the same and more consideration they do US customers, I know, I live overseas and have been taken care of above and beyond what I expected.
Call them up, they have a representative in customer service that deals with overseas customers, they will hook you up, explain your problem and they help solve it, DO NOT send the knife if there is a chance that customs will sieze it.0 -

Welcome to the Forum Zenna,
The Axis Lock Knife is now considered a Flick Blade in Australia and great caution should be used with sending back and forth in the mail.
Australian Customs went to great lengths in court over this and as we know the Commonwealth always wins these things...
Please feel free to PM me should you need any help, with contact Benchmade here in the USA..

Thanks everyone for responding.
I have two BM's at the moment the 520 & a 707, both of them were purchased from the USA, i also have an Adamas on the way from the USA, expecting at anytime.
The 520 had been opened by customs with no issue
Due to BM not responding i opened the knife finding the "omega" spring snapped in half exactly. Being an engineer i thought ill try to make my own, i went to one of my suppliers to obtain some extremely high quality stainless steel spring steel wire. Originally the 520 came with .62mm (0.024") wire i replaced it with .70mm (0.275") wire. bending the wire by hand around a mandrel is a little tricky but not impossible. Using some toolmakers pliers to make the smaller bends is easy too, the trick is once you have finished to put the new springs in the oven for 15min 150 degrees c (302F) and allow to cool at room temperature to relive stress to the bends you have made.
I made two springs to keep the tension on both sides of the knife equal, the knife works perfect sofar
Again, thanks everyone for your warm welcome, im still a little disappointed with Benchmade not responding, i really like their knives.0 -
