Sheath instructions. ie Protagonist kit
I bought a Protagonist 167bk and it came with several sheath accessories but I don't know how they are supposed to fit together or attach to me. No instruction sheet in the box or video on the BM website, some vague references hear and there to something called molly. I can see several ways the bits could fit together but they all seem a bit wonky, like the attachment point is way below the center of mass.
What are the intended final forms?

You can wear that sheath on a belt, use it with a MOLLE vest (using the included malice clip) or put a Tek-Lok on it. Just depends on what your application is. 0 -
Benchmade does need to help out their non-military customers with some guidance how to adapt the Molle attachments for belt carry or whatever...
The attachment/hanger on the Arvensis is an atrocity. The sheath itself is good, but the hangar is junk. Tossed the whole thing for a Spec-opsbrand sheath.0 -
Our Marketing team has actually been working on an instructional pamphlet-y sort of thing for the Protagonist sheath to try and help clear up confusion as much as possible.
I'm not sure how long it'll take, but it's in progress, at least.0 -

I'll check it out when it is released, until then I'll look up molle and tek-lok and maybe figure out my own system. I bought it for use around the farm and camping.(my edc are all 3 inch folders.)
I like the way the knife fits the plastic sheath, nice details like the retention adjustment screw. But for belt use it should have some attachment points above the knife's center of gravity. Maybe in a future redesign make one side of the plastic come about half way up the handle. This rigid extension could be made as separate piece so it could be left or right or removed completely. Might even be a viable addition to the current design, need to test to know for sure.0 -
Now this may be asking for unobtainium, but a beltless attachment design of some sort would be tops as I generally don't use a traditional belt.
It's just the way most of my outdoor pants are designed, they either don't normally need a belt or have an internal built-in belt.
Now I could use a belt, so not a show stopper, but if I could just clip it over the waistband it would be very convenient.[nice wide clip to spread the weight, with secure grip and able to flex around the hip] I imagine this as practical only with lighter knives eg sub 6 ounces.0 -
Bumping this thread..Anybody have pics or instructions on how to setup for belt carry? I mounted the knife in two different scenarios for belt carry, neither of which are comfortable or seem correct. 0 -
Sorry no pics to help, but us military use them to attach lots of equipment to belt & harness. Maxipedition May have U tube how to 0 -
As Po mentioned, I would ditch the whole works in favor of a Spec Op Master Combat small, 6" sheath..I have several and they are an outstanding option for a generic, non specific sheath (plastic insert can be heat molded to specific knife, but not necessary).. USA made, beautifully constructed, jump rated, and reasonably priced compared to custom work.
Most sheaths that come w/ production blades are lacking in one way or another..but its nice to have them w/ the purchase of the knife. BM's sheaths are above par in general in my opinion. Although, again, some may be lacking for your needs/applications
Here is a couple of videos that touch briefly on the sheath, set up and applications..(Id listen to Po..get a Spec Op brand)

Thanks - lot's of good info! I really like the factory sheath, but I guess that I need to figure out which method of carry works best for me. Historically, I've carried fixed blades on a belt, but earlier today I went on a few mile hike and carried the Protagonist in my pocket, which worked surprisingly very well..mostly due to the lightweight and compact size. Additionally, using a Malice clip and attaching it to my backpack strap, as shown in video #2, is a viable option--I like it!0 -
I wonder if the screw holes on the Protagonist sheath are properly spaced for the Tek-Loc like the fixed Adamas. That is a handy thing... 0 -

Second vid I posted confirms Tek Loc compatibility.0 -
/|\ Thanks Patrick for stepping up with video. Now I want one.
PO, 2nd video said it was set up for tec lock.
Bob T. was involved with creation of the tec lock so i’ve Been using for years on his fixed blade designs & I like them in horzontal belt carry ( easy on & off)0 -
I was like 90% set on a Tek-Loc, but saw a write-up on the survivalist forums, where the mounting pattern doesn't align with the 169bk sheath. Only two holes will line up, rather than four, but it still looks functional. I'm literally researching now to see if the Tek-Lok is available with different hole spacing grids. 0 -
Two holes is plenty trust me you will love it 0 -
My pleasure, Bill. When Im not "running off" the new guys..or busy "not getting out of the house much"..it's my favorite thing to do
Akillist is correct..2 holes is all I've ever seen used or needed. I'm pretty sure that'sthe intended application. I thought 4 holes were needed/preferred as well, before my first..after a little research..2 seems to be the norm.

Ad much as I love the custom kydex and hybrid I have..I love the Spec Op stuff.

Alright, I'm ordering a Tek-Lok; looks exactly like what I'm after. My only concern of mounting to the sheath has been alleviated. Thanks guys! 0 -

/|\ I’m guessing the Tek Loc comes with the Chicago screws used to attach it. But if not you’ll need them too.
Just ran to check the Cuda ( designed by Bob T.) I’ve had it for years & it has 2 screws holding the Tec Loc to the sheath. Bob is really meticulous so I’m sure it was designed that way. And as I said I’ve had that CQC1 for years & zero problems.
The sheath PO is suggesting is well made.
Maybe because I’ve used the CUDA for years I’m bias toward it but with the Kidex sheath & Tek Loc horizontal on a belt it is quick draw ( no retention strap) & Knife has never accidentally come out of the sheath. Lastly still doesn’t rattle after all these years. ( An oldie but a goodie)0 -
Bill. I didn't know Bob T was involved in the development of the Tec Lok..that's pretty cool. 0 -
