Testing the 761, 765
Has there been any testing on the 761, 765?
I own both these knives.
The problem I have is these WILL get up and down play over a short time under normal use. Then it sounds and feels like a cheap knife.
1) The blade stop rotates because its only screwed in on 1 side
2) The blade is steel; while the blade stop is aluminum
A possible 3) the lock bar is Ti while the blade is steel; however this may not be an issue because of the lock bars over travel stop. Other possible issue here is lock bar stick.
I have a suggestion to fix this knife! if the lock bar's spring tolerance can be controlled during manufacturing.
I know these knives didn't sell well...
The resell markets is also terrible for these...
That said I love the 761.. BM pushed the envelope with a thin Ti folder.. sadly its very flawed

Really?
Is that accurate, Jason??0 -
I also love the 761.
Maybe I’m a minority, but I’ve never had a problem with mine, having carried it on and off for 3 years. No stop pin problems, no blade play. I haven’t used it hard, but for average EDC duties, I love it. Shame that it’s not more popular.
Perhaps I’m lucky and found a good one.
It’s one knife I’ll never get rid of.0 -
Was yours a first production by any chance?
Both my 761s are first productions
I was told by BM at one time the 765s and later 761s fixed that issue... however, I just got a 765 through trade... dude had used it to skin many deer and carried in the woods and sand.. I completely disassembled it and cleaned everything... same issue up and down play after <50 flicks.
I put a dual thumb stud on mine from a 710.
That way I can flick it open from the underside.
The "flicking" it open dents the aluminum stop and or it rotates.0 -

Negative. Mine is regular production.

I do vaguely remember BKC addressing this initially, after I heard others were having problems.
If you’re having problems with a self-rotating stop pin, I’d send it in to Product Servives. I flick the hell out of mine, with no adverse effects. Like I said, my adjustable stop pin has never been problematic.
If you don’t mind the wait, Lifesharp should be able to fix you up. Good luck.0 -
I did send it in.... When I got it back the up/down play started again on the same day. 0 -

/|\ Send it back again. I have a 710-1401 needed to go back 3 times. It perfect now ( thanks again Jason & Mick).0 -

Well, shoot...
If it were me having that problem, I know what I’d do...
My advice is to keep contacting Benchmade (as many attempts as it takes to make it right).
I’d call up customer service and explain your situation. I’d keep sending it back until they:
A) fix the problem
B) replace your knife
I know this seems like a pain (and it is). But stuff happens.
I have indeed heard of stories of customers that’ve had to send in their knife 3 or 4 times before the issue was resolved to their satisfaction.
In the end, Benchmade does stick to their Lifesharp guarantee.
You paid for that guarantee and service when you initially bought your knife.
Don’t hesitate to press them on the issue.
Just keep at ‘em.
Good luck, sir.0 -

hehe I wish!.. I mostly just flick the studs with my thumb or finger, not even full wrist action.
I'll keep on them. Benchmade has been good in my book regarding their warranty service.
I was actually hoping to talk to an engineer or the designer that worked on this knife originally; and offer up my solution. See what they think
I could see this knife being a hit if they did a sprint run.. Say CF scale on the none liner side. (Perhaps a factory dual thumb stud) I think people would buy'em up IF the up/down play problem was corrected.
My guess is this knife is mostly CNC machined, so Benchmade wouldn't have to do tooling to fix it..
Maybe that's a reason they haven't really tried to fix it... It is CNC'd so they don't "need" to make that money back they spent on tooling because there was no tooling.
And lets be honest the new 781 is GREAT0 -
/|\ I liked the knife in right hand & was disappointed no dual stud. So add CF & icing on the cake & My wallet opens.
And I will no longer have to feel bad when Mac posts those irritating pics of his in hand.

Just wanted to provide an update...
Benchmade provided me a UPS shipping label to send in my (2) 761's and 765 for warranty work.
They have a "Confidentially Notice" in their email footer so I won't quote them... but I will say they know how to correct the issue I'm having and continue to offer excellent customer service.
Note: not all Ti Mono family knives have this issue.0 -
Right on.
That’s great to hear.
Glad you could have that sorted out.
Let this be a lesson to anyone weary of trying a 761/765. They really are fantastic knives. No surprise that the customer service is also top notch.0 -
/|\ No surprise BKC’s Service resolved all your issues.
Wish they could resolve mine - duel thumb studs & blocking Mac’s pics of them without.

I feel for you, Bill.
It’s just not fair, is it?!0 -

BM sent me a 710 dual thumb stud and it works on the 761!0
