2 questions.
I have 2 questions 1 on the crooked river (my new favorite knife) and 1 on the 810.
1. On the crooked river how does the stabilized wood hold up to sweat/moisture? Does it require any special care?
2. About the m4 on the 810. This is my new primary work knife, and the first knife I have owned in m4. I'm worried about rust, working in public safety I am out in the elements, including just sweat from in my pocket. Should I be concerned with corrosion, especially in the pivot area? How should I prevent rust on the uncoated inside area of the blade by the pivot (the pivot hole, the sides by the washers, back of the blade that rides against the axis lock)?
Should I take it apart every so often to check for corrosion?
I lubed it up with ballistol which has worked good preventing rust on my Firearms.

I wonder this about my 810 also. I have a small amount of visible corrosion on the pivot area of the blade. Also my first/only experience with M4.0 -
The stabilized wood has resin added to take the elements like sweat/moisture.
SS must have more than 10.5% chromium in the steel. CPM M-4 only has 4.0% chromium which makes it a premium tool steel. The coated M-4 would help in fighting rust but the uncoated will need more care by keeping it oiled and wiping it clean of moisture or sweat. The pivot is SS but i would suggest that it is kept oiled to prevent rust from entering the pivot area.0 -
Stabilized wood is significantly more stable than regular wood. However, it's not impermeable to water, so you do want to try and keep it dry when possible. You don't need to worry about sweat or moisture you'd see in daily use, but let's just say the 15080-2 is not designed to be a dive knife.
For CPM-M4, a little oil goes a long way. Keep the knife as clean as you can and oil it before putting it away for an extended period of time. I'm sure the guys here could give you some more hints/tips for keeping the blade in top shape.0 -
I've been told by knife makers that stabilized wood is basically Micarta, just using wood for the substrate instead of some woven material. Should be pretty impervious to moisture. I've got some stabilized hardwood handles on knives that have been in a lot of dampness, sweat and rain, with no ill effects.
If I had a 810 in damp pockets on a daily basis, I think I would lube it weekly, whether it needed it or not. M-4 doesn't rust like bearing steel, but it does rust like tool steel. Over several weeks in damp conditions, you could get some oxidation going on under those washers, I think.0 -
Thanks guys for the info.
I will make sure to oil it once a week. I'm thinking of getting a belt sheath for the 810. I'm concerned about the sweat, being I'm wearing long pants in 90± degree heat, not counting the heat index. Most of the stuff in my pockets get sweaty.
Any recommendations on a belt sheath for a 1 3/4" duty belt?0 -
Because of the 810's size I prefer to carry it in a horizontal belt pouch. Benchmade's & Maxexpedition's are the ones I been using. Benchmade's are basic black, the others come in a selection of colors for us fashion conscience GQ types. 0 -

Are you talking about the molle folder pouch on the site. Those are horizontal?0 -
Those can be worn either way, I prefer horizontal carry ( hold over from carrying Les's balisongs) 0
