Your perfect knife...
Yeah, this is like asking the meaning of life...what does your perfect knife look like? I personally favor a long narrow folder about a four inch blade...I can't go back to a frame lock...got to be an axis lock for me. Too many knives get big and bulky when they get a little blade length (ie 275) or have a series of contours (ie 810). Both great knives...just not my knives. I usually carry some variation of the 710, but with it recently discontinued I have been looking forward to new knives. I love the 15080 Crooked River. It has been making it into my pocket more lately...What I really want if I could simply conjure up such a thing is a longer 4 inch bladed Valet (485) model. There is a reason that there are so many different knives out there...fixed blade or folder...manual or automatic. Steel & handle choices alone could bog down such a thread. Many different tastes out there.

Today it looks like a mini AFCK for dress slacks. Other days it looks like a 14200, a 14205, a 14205BT, a 710, a 940, a 950, a CROOKED RIVER, or a Presidio 2. Thank goodness someone invented rotation! 0 -

Goliath it sounds like your perfect knife might be in the same neighborhood with MarkG's most recent crusade to resurrect a modernized version of the AFCK.0 -

That is a righteous quest. I'd be impressed by anyone who got them to see that they're missing an opportunity by not 're-introducing such a classic as the AFCK. Even better if BKC did it without sticking something orange on it...0 -

It's a hard subject. Of course the first response is always, perfect for what?
For me, the perfect knife has a balance between premium and functional materials. The 710-143 embodies that best. Blasted Ti bolsters, carbon fiber scales, stainless Damascus blade. So these are tough, user grade materials and finishes. You can use them without permanently degrading the knife. If you get scratches in the bolsters or scales, they can be refinished pretty easily. The stainless Damascus blade is perfect also, a balance between knifemaking art and performance. It holds an edge very well, good enough for the ordinary utility that makes of 99.99% of my uses. It can also be refinished easily.
But the 710-143 isn't totally perfect. I prefer the Crooked River blade shape and handle profile. If the Crooked River in the pic below had a stainless Damascus blade, it would be nearer perfect than the 710-143. And sometimes a narrower blade is more versatile for utility. M390 is near perfect for performance, so the custom Barrage at the bottom is very near perfect also. A 581 with the 710-143 materials would be nearly as perfect as I could get.
So, if you could somehow blend the attributes of these three knives, you'd have my perfect knife. At least for pocket folders in that size range.

^^^This^^^ But shorten the handle (from 5.5" to 5") and thin it a little, too (.45" would suffice). Those two things should get the weight under 4 oz. Now it's perfect.0 -

If only I could find it I could stop buying all these knives. 0 -
I'm still a big fan of the 908BK-1501 Stryker. I remember when its predecessor was released and we were chatting about it on the forum saying, "Now, if they would just make it with an Axis lock, CF scales and an M4 blade, it would be just about the perfect knife."
A couple of years later, it arrived in just that form. We weren't expecting the little hump on the shoulders, and actually, nobody was really expecting them to make the improved knife at all, but I guess the little hump was necessary to get the Axis lock into the handle. That's ok...it reminds me of the hump on a bull elk.0 -
Yes! And it comes in a "ultimate" version too, the 908-161.
Difference between "perfect" and ultimate - a perfect knife, I think is very dependent on use, while ultimate has a little more emphasis on materials and finish. A perfect knife may have a coated M4 blade, because the performance in cutting is unsurpassed. The ultimate knife has stainless Damascus and milled handle scales.

There's a 908-1501 on the bay for $200. 0 -

Nice concise post as usual PO - thanks
I like both. IF I had to grab ONE, it would be the Crooked River 16010 -

/|\ speaking of "turning blue" I really thought KW would come out with signature Rift with the M390 blade like their 710 & 810 ( think Beach Boys " Wouldn't It Be Nice"'playing in the background)

If I could have anything, it would probably be a 615 variant. Absolutely love the ergos on that knife, but would somehow have it lighter and slimmer. Can't (yet) imagine anything better. 0 -

It's part of my CF family - 810DLC-1602, 940-1 and my Keyman Loco custom0 -
When pondering the issue, coming to mind first and foremost, almost reflexively, is an Adamas folder, most notably with a satin finish, plain edge, five and a half (5.5") inch M390 blade and a slightly elongated guard / deeper finger choil. 0 -
It would also serve to lovingly bitch slap Cold Steel, demonstrating that the design and production of an extra large folder needn't consist of over exaggerated features, or fall short when it comes to class, character and careful attention to detail on a comphrehensive basis. A statement, to be made loud and clear, that if, as of when, a highly competent and capable wholly based US company such as BM encroaches upon CS's territory, the end result will make most, if not all, CS oversized Taiwanese offerings, appear to be lacking in some respects, despite often looking the part, possessing some positive attributes and being fun and effective implements in magically turning crack head would-be thieves into olympic caliber sprinters. Show Mr. Thompson et al that their cornering of that segment of the market is largely attributable to an absence of competitors in that department. 0
