Question for Jason re: camping
Jason,
I believe it was in the forum knife thread, but I recall somebody mentioning that you were camping. Out of curiosity, what knives do you take camping?

Yessir, I went camping a couple weeks ago.
I usually try to take a good fixed blade for tough tasks, and then a folder for camp tasks. They're generally something new(er).
This last time I took a 535 and a Crooked River, and had a 169BK for the FB.0 -

Thx for the response!
I do quite a bit of camping and hiking (year round) and I always struggle trying to decide on which knives to bring...I have too many. haha0 -
Haha I know what you mean...
Fortunately for me, I generally have knives in testing that require some TLC in the field so it's an easier decision. Not always though! In which case, I generally have a few knives I tend to gravitate towards.0 -
Similar set up to Jason. Been taking the 162 for hard work, and always a folder in my pocket (usually a Ritter for camping), but I've also been throwing in the 152 for food prep. Like I need a reason to carry more knives... 0 -
I'm just glad no one seems to be taking their 15016-161. I'll be cringing when you guys start posting pictures of yourselves gutting deer with it. 0 -

Ten bucks says Marty dresses at least something with his.

Haha I always have a few fixed blades in my truck, too. An embarrassment of riches.
My orange Ritter in M390 is my river knife. Hi-vis in case I drop it (it's generally on board shorts at that point, so it's riskier), indestructible handles, and that M390 never rusts or seems to dull too bad. Kiiiinda perfect, when you think about it.0 -

You betcha.
$20 says it'll be a black bear, in a bout 3 weeks or so.0 -

I don't know Po. That picture is a classic and it made me hungry.0 -
Regarding knives for camping...
Hardly anything would beat a 169 Protagonist for all around light cutting jobs. I used a 140 Nimravus, essentially the same design, for virtually all my camping for a decade and never once wished for anything better. They still make the 140, if you don't mind the aluminum handle scales.
Tell you what, Benchmade's 115 Arvensis is an amazing knife. If you don't have an axe handy and want your belt knife to double for splitting wood and chopping, you should consider one of these. They are pretty awesome. Bring along a Crooked River or a 551-1 for smaller cutting jobs.
I've gone on day hikes with just a Contego or folding Adamas. I'd rather have the Adamas for long hard work, but both would do about anything short of hardcore batoning.
I like the fixed Adamas for hiking. Very light, very well designed for medium utility and self-defense.
The woodcraft guys really like the 16X Bushcrafter. It's a fantastic knife - great design, S30V, G-10 with liners. 10/10. I just can't fall in love with the handle. I know that is how a hard use woodcraft knife handle should be shaped, it's all on me. I prefer the flatter handles on my Nim and Arvensis.
Okay, just rambling...it's what I do.

Man, PO, I totally agree with you. The 169 is totally underestimated as a utility fixed blade. I'm probably biased because I spent freaking months modeling those handles, but I love mine. 0 -
You enablers..I ordered a 169bk last night. haha.. 0 -
In all fairness, you started this thread. Totally did it to yourself.

That being said, you need to make sure you get credit for the sale. Probably, you are personally responsible for a couple hundred grand worth of sales on this board.0 -
You know what, I should get a commission for all this forum-ing with y'all..
I don't know if it's quite THAT high, but I could see it being significant.

I bought a dozen in the last year and a half, and I'd say the forum is a pretty big part of why. I started reading here when I was looking for a higher end knife than the cheap one I had been carrying for years. Got a Foray, then needed something cheaper for the boat. Then something smaller for the office. By then I was ripe for the forum knife, which made me realize how much I like CF, which caused me to buy a 484-1. A few more in the middle, then Anthem, then 15016-161. Right now, there's a 15016-2 sitting in my mailbox for no real reason other than liking the GC.
I'm not entirely sure how this happened, particularly since I work in an office and my big use is opening packages. But I don't see this addiction ending any time soon.0 -
/|\ so Jason do you want us all to email Les, & point out the retro active bonus you deserve? 0 -
Haha no, that's ok.
Appreciate ya looking out though, Bill!0
