I just got this knife last week and used it all weekend. Haven't had any issues with dry-fire safety. You can find some of the ELMAX blades out there but BKC had a reason to stop making them in that steal so I am not sure you would want to pick one up. The only issue I have is that when I fire it in AUTO I have to fight the spring to close it instead of having it like a manual opener. I just forget as it is an AXIS lock and I am so used to just flicking it open and then back closed.
My main reason for getting the Dual Action was to have an AUTO when I am in a location that isn't AUTO friendly. I can still pull it out and manually open it but I have the assurance that I can get it out and open quickly if needed with one hand.0 -
Was it ever released in Elmax?
It's a bit heavy for an edc, but it's got a bit of a coolness factor to it. I dig it.0 -

The Serum was never released in Elmax. We got a bad batch of material and switched it back to 154CM.0 -

Isn't the Prototype in ELMAX? I have done a google on Serum ELMAX and found one or two retailers but they could just be going off of original product information and not what is on the knife.0 -

I know this is an older thread but I just wanted to say thank you for the idea of tightening the pivot screw just a touch. It never occurred to me.
My Serum came "free swinging" and that's how I left it. If the blade wasn't at least vertical, it wouldn't fire. Now I can hold it upside down and it fires every time. It's not free swinging anymore but that's a minor trade off IMO.0 -
Picked one up on a big discount and love it! I wouldn't have touched it at map pricing but at 50% off this knife is a great value. I have had none of the problems that the other posters have had. Fit n' finish are excellent! Edge is symmetrical and sharp. Centered blade and smooth action in manual use and fires hard in auto.. no problems with mechanism whatsoever.. nice thick blade of 154 and the ergos are stellar.. I can hold the knife in any position and the mech works flawlessly. The unused blade everybody has mentioned works great as a fingertip choil in the over hand pinch grip as it has a gentle radius..I think some serum owners need to adjust their pivots to find the sweet spot and lock tite that sucker.. not my favorite benchmade but I love this model. 0 -

I’ve had one for a while, and just a few days or so ago, it doesn’t lock/stay closed anymore.
Dunno if it’s the DA spring, but something in there is broken. So I’ll be sending it in soon.
