950 Rift Mod
I really like 950 Rift. Well I like my 950BK-1 to be exact.
I have sort of request to BKC with some update on 950. Also blade steel change from 154CM to at least CPM950 would be nice.
Here is my 950BK-2
Jimping:
The place I have outlined in red should have shallow cut (1/16" with, 1/8" apart)
Each edge of cuts should be rounded, of cause.
Doing this, it would assure grip in normal hold as well as reverse hold.
Added traction would provide sure grip without having aggressive protrusion like that in 810.
Round off the edge of G10:
This area should have rounded off. It hinders grip by causing hot spot without wearing a glove.
It is not needed to be as aggressive as 810, but smoothing the edge of the handle would be a big plus.
.
.
Cross drilled handle (skeletonize):
I think this is self explanatory. I can see this would add to machining cost, but lighting the blade would be very ideal and put balance of the knife more to the pivot point.
(edit) Currently I am holding off this project. It is very tough to make cross drilled hole without drill press with 1/2" carbide drill.

Sorry, but if I understand, you want to smooth the ridges on the handle milling to avoid hot spots...then add jimping?
Personally, I don't think a knife with a handle profile like the Rift's needs any jimping, but then I don't think any properly designed knife handle needs jimping.
I only have the Forum knife Rift with carbon fiber handle scales, so I suppose the G-10 scales might be a little heavier, but my knife is just slightly handle-heavy on the balance, which I consider pretty much ideal.0 -

I am thinking of traction jimping of 940 or Griptilian style, not skin ripping of 810 style.quote:Originally posted by Po:

I would like to see Rift to lose 0.5~1Oz. It is heavier than 710, even it has shorter and a little bit thinner blade (0.001" /0.02mm). Heck, it is heavier than 580/583.
I do recall you have Adamas, and I don't mind that sort of wide blade to be heavy. IMHO, Rift can shed a little weight.
Yes, I don't own Rift in CF handleMust be nice. Oh yeah, how about 950 with 940-1 treatment?

Show offSuch a nice knife, but I can't get my hands on this. (LE of 50? I need to get very lucky.)I guess I have to dream about 950-2 with CF & S90V...

I have finally finished liner jimping. Please forgive me for poor black primer job I have done after cutting notches to the liner.
underside view
I have made jimping for index finger and pinky finger. It also provides traction with reverse grip as well.

Reverse grip thumb traction & Spine thumb area jimping:

Since this Rift has a better grip, I have rounded off the edge of handle so that it is more comfortable barehanded grip.
Revised jimping location, side view.

When was this released? I ask cus I missed it.:{0 -
It was a Plaza Cutlery exclusive. I missed it too so I'm guessing 2010/early 2011. 0 -

The picture has one with a CPM-M4 blade, so I don't think it's the Plaza Cutlery LE. The Plaza Cutlery 950 special was 154CM/CF scales and a run of 200; the 950-801, IIRC.
The 50 piece LE runs I recall are the outside of US 950-901 (CPM-M4/CF scales) and the KW 950-1001 (CPM-M4/G10 scales).0 -
Thanks! Indeed, I stand corrected. 0 -
I'm telling you (and BKC folks ) I want my RIFT in M390, PLEEESE!!!
More I use it (with some of the mod), more I like it. I want to own Rift 950 in M390. Surely I can live with S110V, but I can wait for it after M390

And the congregation all exclaimed AMEN!!!0 -
M4 works fine for me. I do agree that they should drill the liners though.

DOAT looks great. How much weight was lost with those big holes?8 0 -
+1 DOAT, that does looks good.
Yeah, I was looking for M4, but availability is limited. I wanted more "regular production" model, 950-1401 like 810-1401.

I re-read this post several times ( looked at pics even more). I'd pay Benchmade custom shop to make the mods described to my standard 95o, as it's a bit too heavy ( IMHO) and it bites too much. Never done any heavy work with it, but would want to wear gloves. Maybe some sand paper could de- burr it.
Main point is if gun manafactures have custom shops and I believe Buck had one, why not Benchmade. There are modifications I pay for, and would love a Benchmade authorized custom shop as first option. Regards to all, Bill0 -

Thank you for your interest, Bill. Rift 950 is one of the robust knife, and it is not difficult to work it yourself. AS you mentioned, rough G10 can be sanded down with 100 grit sand paper that is used for wood work.
Cutting jimping is easy, if you have Dremel miniature cut wheel, and T6, T10 torx screw driver (make sure you buy good one, because one of those cheap one will damage actual torx bolt. One nice thing to have is light machine oil. I use Slip2000 EWL, a synthetic Gun lube that also repels water, but any machine oil will do.
Here is the picture of having two liners bolted together. I would recommend doing this before cutting notches with cut wheel.

I hope it helps you to do it by yourself to cut jimping.

Thanks, for the helpful instructions. I found them interesting, and you given me the courage to tackle sanding the hot spots on the G-10. If I had the tools and skill I drill lightening holes in the liners. Thanks & regards Bill 0 -
if you're nervous about taking sandpaper to them, i had good success with a slightly worn green scouring pad. less aggressive but still effective 0 -
Worn green pad sounds good ( baby steps)

Thanks for helpful tips. I took an Emory-board to hot spots on my 810, couple of passes and hot spots on G-10 gone. Going to tackle my Rift tomorrow then it's off to the professional for lighing-holes. Next modification is swapping out the metal back spacer on the 810 for lighter material ( G-19 or silver twill carbon fiber), may depend on the craftsman believes best)
Best regards to all, Bill Hammer0 -
To MFL, Thank you for starting this pics of your 950. I recently had DOAT add lighting holes to several of my Rifts as you suggested. What a difference! Shifting the balance up closer to the pivot IMHO and reduction in weight changes this from a good knife to a great one, (not displacing my 94x's as EDC) and make carry it a joy. Again MFL thanks for getting this started and to DOAT thanks again for quality work.

Welcome to Rift brotherhoodI'm glad you like your Rift as much as I do.
Also, it is good to know DOAT offered service to make your Rift liner with cross drilled holes.0 -
Just wishing that when Rift comes in M390, that would be very nice. Hint, hint, to KW folks..

What tooling did you use to skeletonize the liners? Standard HSS drill? Something more exotic?0 -
Hey DOAT, I'm curious as well.

From CS, there is 950-1401 is out.
Black or satin blade in S30V.
It has Orange stand offs and orange black swirl G-10.0 -
MFL nice waiting for satin finished blades

Hmm... we made a satin version too. I don't see it on the website though. Maybe give TCS a call?0 -
