Removing thumb studs on a 705
I have removed a number of thumb studs with a torx driver to sharpen the knives. How do you remove the thumb studs on a 705 with no torx connection? There are little holes in the side of it. Are they for some Benchmade proprietary wrench? If so I can't come up with anything small and sturdy enough to fit the small holes to give it a try.
I did a search but there are a lot of results for thumb studs and I gave up.

I've clamped them in a plastic jawed vice to get them loose. A pair of pliers with a few layers of electrical tape over the jaws would probably do the job as well. 0 -
I had luck using a couple of pushpins. Po's idea is probably a less frustrating way to go. 0 -
Yet another use for Knipex Pliers Wrenches, e.g.

They have amazing leverage and parallel, toothless jaws. Great for anything you need to grip but don't want to mar or scratch. Big size range too. Not paid to say this, just a happy customer.0 -
Thanks for the great ideas.
I like Knipex tools I have a couple of their Cobra pliers. They are awesome. I never would have thought of smooth jawed pliers.quote:Originally posted by kirbysdl:

I second the pliers and elctircal tape. 2 or 3 layers to be safe.
But those knipex pliers are pretty cool.0 -
They are made to use with a socket nut. I can't remember what size but if you try a few i'm sure you will find it. I either read that here somewhere on on bladeforums. One you find the right size you can see that's how they were meant to be used. Super easy and you can tighten them all you want. 0 -
I don't know what you mean by a socket nut. A socket that is used to loosen bolts and nuts have engagement points on the bolts and nuts. You must be talking about something different than a standard socket. A link or picture would be helpful. 0 -

Wow bone head moment on my part. For some reason I thought the conversation was about the Rift. A socket certainly wouldn't do you any good with this model. My apologies.0
