710-1401 Clip
Greetings Everyone,
I got my 710-1401 two weeks ago, and love it! It's my first version of this model. I'm excited to carry it, but have noticed that the split arrow clip doesn't touch the handle scales like all my other BM knives. As a result, the knife slides around on the edge of my pocket and provides no real retention. I emailed BM customer service, and got a prompt reply with a replacement clip shipped to me fast. Great service! However, the new clip displays the same issue. I'm uncomfortable carrying the knife when it doesn't hang on to my pocket well.
Is this a manufacturing defect in the matching up of the knife with the clip? Has anyone else experienced this issue? I'm wondering what to do next..
Thanks for any insight!

No, the clip just needs to be tensioned a little bit more. We adjust most of the clips on our knives depending on handle contour, clip land, etc.
You can probably figure out a good way to do it at home, but you can also send it in to us and we'll fix it for you, too.0 -
Jason,
Thanks for the quick reply! I'll give it a try, see what happens.0 -
Sounds like a plan! 0 -

2 pair of needle nose pliers with duct tape wrapped around the teeth will solve your problem. Put a slight bend in it to make it tighter against the scale and your problem will be solved.0 -
This is how I adjust my clips. Obviously not with the blade open but it works quick and won't scratch the clip. You just hold the knife on the edge of a surface and gently push the clip until you get the desired tightness.

^Smart.
Makes sense.
People always caution me about breaking screws when I tension my clips, because I pretty much do the same as boinkman here, without removing the clip.
I say to them: Have some common sense and finesse. Obviously you need a bit of force. Bend it like a man, not a gorilla. It works.
I've always done this, never broken one screw.0 -
Also, if you think about it, we're just using the same forces at work that caused the clip to become loose in the first place. If the screws and threads are solid, no harm can be done. 0 -
Amen brother. Preach it.

I ended up trying a method suggested by Boinkman in another thread, echoed by a few here. I positioned the clip with screws, facing in the opposite direction, and simply pressed on it gently. Worked like a charm. Thanks to all! 0 -
Glad you got it squared away. 0
