I know you want potable but look in to a guided system like lansky, edge pro, or wicked edge. I have a wicked edge and let me tell you I was scared to use my knife after I sharpened my knife with it. It was that sharp! You should be able to get a edge with one of then that will last till you get back home

DMT & Gatco both make 2 stone guided sets that go into a small bag for portability. Useful edges are achievable without a great amount of practice/skill.

When you say guided system, do you mean something like this :
    Lansky Sharpener http://lansky.com/index.php/pr...dic-knife-sharpener/

Or do you mean the actual guided sharpeners that are like $275 and are basically a guide for a stone?

These are ok just remember the key to getting it sharp is creating a burr on the opposite side of the blade if you do that you'll get you knife scary sharp
    I use the wicked edge

I use one of the smiths 4 inch Arkansas stone. Lowes Home Improvement or Walmart has them. They are fairly inexpensive and cheap, and made in the usa. They work good enough.

A field sharpener isn't going to do squat if you don't know how to sharpen, kinda like getting a red dot scope tossing it on a rifle and wondering why you aren't hitting what you aim at.

Learn at home, find what works and then get what you want to take out.

If you really need just some sort of edge, no matter how crappy, get a cheap carbide pull through sharpener, you'll be able to saw through whatever you want, it'll be ugly but it'll work.

I had ok luck using little pull through field sharpeners on 440 stainless but on harder steel it didn't do well. I use a wicked edge and haven't touched a pull through since.

I want something that I don't have to be skilled at using since I'm not. I keep seeing those ceramic/carbine type sharpeners that you just slide the blade through.. but I don't know. I'm not trusting my Benchmade to some $3 made-in-china piece of plastic.
    Please help me find something!
I never use the slide thru ones that are metal. They mess up my blades. However, those simple little ceramic pull throughs that you are talking about might be the best answer when you want something simple, small and light for hiking. They won't hurt your blade. That's all I use in the kitchen. They're good enough to get you back home where you can use a more substantial system.

It may be overkill, but I use diamond sharpener for S110v,S90, M390 and sometimes with S30V. 154cm, 440x, ASU-XX and D2, I use Lansky stone with fine results.

My hands seems to keep angle sturdy, so I have been using freehand without ill effect. May be using some angle guide when I need to re-profile.

Stopping: I think I need diamond compound for wear resistant steel. I'm getting tired with those

i keep my 940bk in the safe which is my baby next to my stryker, and my volli and 275 are the workers.
if you EDC a knife, it should be sharpened how ever you want to do it. my blades are nicked, and i have tips broken off some, i use them for how they are made...well, i use them for other things than cutting but thats why i carry a knife.

just got to send it back to the factory for a tune up..
    Cool

Yeah, carbide pull through sharpener, it makes me feel like someone is scraping blackboard with fingernail.

If you are using carbon steel hatchet in the field, may be....

*That's ok but if you ever learn to really sharpen a knife blade, you'll throw the carbide pull thru in the trash forever - yes. *

if you EDC a knife, it should be sharpened by the best means available.
    *Fixed that for you.*

*Me too, but I've found that certain steels are much less prone to nicks and breakage than run-of-the-mill ones.*

*Although better than a carbide pull thru, you can put a much better cutting, and lasting edge on a blade than the factory will, if you learn to sharpen*.

I have two Lansky Arkansas stone sharpening systems with the C clamp system to hold the set-up while I sharpen. It is worth its weight in gold and does an excellent job. I can sharpen a knife scary sharp now. I highly recommend it. A small simple ceramic steel will touch up an edge for you in the field and not weigh too much. I keep a Lansky system at home and one in my camper. If a knife really needs touched up it's simple to set it up on the table in the camper and sharpen away.

Another excellent product is a USA made KME sharpening system. I can tell you by just looking at this system it is outstanding. If I would have found these first, I'm not sure I would have the Lansky. Okay I take that back, I still would have a Lansky system in the camper and would have a KME system for home.

Been using the Lansky sharpener system for a couple of years now because it's simple to maintain a proper bevel. And cheap compared to some other systems out there.

DMT Deluxe Kit Aligner Guided Diamond Sharpener

I've been using this. Its a great, cheap portable system that has quality diamond stones that will put edges on M390 surprisingly fast.

Yep DMT for me also it works and for $60 how can you beat that one tip though clean stones with a lite oil.

I like DMT diamond, because it doesn't need oil, but normal water. You just run across diamond and it sharpens.

DMT-Diamond paste tubes (6 micron, 3 micron, 1 micron) for stropping..

My goal is to have one Lansky strop per compound because your not supposed to mix obviously.. My only Lansky strop is currently loaded with Flitz..

This thread has helped me. My first sharpening system is on its way, and I can't wait to try it out. This one, for around $80 including shipping I think..

    https://www.sharpeningsupplies.../Images/MAGKIT-4.jpg

Hmm, I thought that the above link would post a pic, but..

Anyway, it's a diamond sharpener with 7 angle choices, sharpens either dry of with water, and has a case. Seems good. I've got to start somewhere, so there it is. I look forward to bringing my first Benchmade back to life: it's an Ares, I think it's the Knife of the Month, marked November 2000, and it's terribly dull. I've always imagined sharpening it myself, so I'll see what happens.

Now the question is: how do determine what angle to set my sharpener to, for each knife? I don't know if they're all the same or not..All my knives need some attention, but don't need 're-profiling as far as I can tell..just a good sharpening.

    Any thoughts?

From your link it looks like diamond stones ........remember not to press hard on the stone .....that will just tear the diamonds off the stone ......very lite presser , let the diamond do the cutting.
