Alright, we know what we want to play with but we want to hear from you.
What steels (or even non-ferrous metals) would you like to see us play with? Why? What is it about that material that you're interested in for use in a knife?

There's always a bit of learning curve when processing new or exotic materials. If it was easy, everyone would do it.
We've nailed down our processes for M390 and have no plans to drop it. It's a great knife steel.0 -

My take on this would be to do a special model each year. Pick a special steel and then release it in a discontinued model for an entire year. No 300 limit where it's hard to get and secondary flipping gets crazy. Just make as many as you can sell for a year. When the year is up do a different steel/model. It would be great to have the 690 available again for a whole year with titanium/timascus handles and s90v blade steel. Or the 635 with that stamped titanium handles and a carpenter steel. Making a bunch of them would get the steel in more peoples hands and let newer fans get in on some of the older models. 0 -

I like this idea! As long as they release the mini-AFCK in a left-handed version again like in 2000, with Elmax or CTS-XHP.0 -

Vance, thank you for answering my question. It is gratifying to hear that you have all your problems sorted out with regard to M390. At first I was concerned that we had seen the last of the knives made with this steel coming from BM.
May be the opening of the new subforums has helped to create this impression, but I sense a general feeling of enthusiasm, pride and confidence within BM this year, driven by the willingness to interact more openly with their customers. Although the models in this year's catalog are not too inspiring I am confident that we will see fruits of the new approach down the road in future.
I would say looking back people will agree that the opening of the new subforums is a key milestone in the history of BM.0 -

First, thank you for making this thread to solicit blade steel ideas from users. If Benchmade wants to remain competitive with other knife manufacturers, it should consider developing LE's and gold class knives made of the following steels:
(1) S90V - Posters here are in consensus regarding this steel for a reason. Although it will eat up your machines, it is the most affordable and best performing "highest of the high-end" steel currently on the market (work that heat treat hard, gents);
(2) Uncoated CPM-M4 - The new heat treat on Benchmade's CPM-M4 and higher hardness is absolutely amazing. Keep up the great work, but please start offering selections without blade coatings!
(3) M390 - If you guys have M390 nailed, there is little need for ELMAX or Carpenter, imo;
(4) CPM-154 - Consider replacing CM154 with a properly heat treated CPM-154. This is a huge proposition, but will yield huge gains in performance for BM's blue/black class.
(5) BLADE GRINDS - Honestly, the best thing Benchmade could do is to start offering flatter blade grinds for better slicing.
(6) CPM 3V - ...For all heavy-use fixed blades and Bushcrafters. Expensive but top of the line!0 -

I echo all of the above especially no. (5). Thinner grinds will definitely make the knives better slicers and reduce the time required for sharpening.0 -
From what i have heard M390 is extremely good in all categorys of rating for a blade as well as the time tested classic, 440C. Are the steels as S110V or SM-100 and all kinds of other exotic or new steels, are they a LOT better than M390 or 440C? Or is it when your at the top it is coming down to splitting hairs?
